Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

     Eddie's old post
Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning

Why do we need to split it if it's less than 500K characters?

Not sure when the warning appears, but it seems the limit is larger than before?

[up][up] It's not because of the error, but the fact that I thought the Mario folder was too long (it had like two dozen entries) by itself.

Sorry for posting in the wrong place.

Sandbox3.N3xus has the warning.

After it's split, I should fix the YMMV bits I just removed from it, depending on where there intended destinations are...

CharacterDevelopmentThread.Adventure just got the too-long warning. Apocalemur reported the warning so I relayed it to here.

How should we split it? I think moving the tropes to their own pages would be the best bet, but I'm not sure how it would be namespaced. CharacterDevelopmentThreadAdventure.Tropes?

How long does a page need to be before the tropes are folderized? I was wondering if Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf and Happy Heroes were approaching the point where they needed folderization.

[up] There's no set rule, but for those pages, I'd say they're definitely at the point where folderizing is a good idea, considering it took several scrolls of the mouse wheel on my largescreen monitor to get to the bottom of each page's tropes.

Given what you just said about Pleasant Goat and Happy Heroes above, the page for The Dreamstone is of a similar length but is not yet folderized. I assume folders should be instated for it as well?

[up] Definitely so. Maybe this would be a good rule of thumb - if, at a glance, it looks like the majority of letter's counts of examples (# A examples, # B examples, and so on) is somewhere between 5 and 10 at a minimum, it's time to consider folderizing the page.

Anyone here who just follows the thread, but not the list?

What's the limit for character count now? Still 500K?

Podcast. On The Rocks has hit the limit... but in a rather weird way.

There are a ridiculous number of wicks potholed to themselves (example: [[Film/TheLordOfTheRings The Lord Of The Rings]]), which are inflating the character count without changing the visible page length.

I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.

[up]I can chip away at fixing that. It should be much easier than chipping away Word Cruft on Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 01 To 03, Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 04 To 06, and Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 07 To 09, right? ... or am I Tempting Fate? (20 minutes or one edit-lock later) I was Tempting Fate. I have to be super-duper careful in what I highlight in order to not accidentally delete any of the markup involved in making the tables.

[up][up] I've done some work on the main page (through 241 working down from the top) but will have to move on soon. The two subpages probably need the same kind of work done.

[up]Eek, I'm so sorry, I accidentally undid your work! I forgot to check to see if anybody else had done anything to the page overnight before I copy-pasted from my text document. For Podcast. On The Rocks, I've removed a vast majority of the potholes linking to themselves and replaced them with camel-case links. I probably didn't get them all, but I'm tired of looking for them while suspecting I've Failed a Spot Check. I've done all I can, so since it's still getting the too long page warning, someone else is going to have to spearhead fixing the problem.

Does the number of folders affect the size warning?

I forget if the message triggers due to a scan of the actual HTML source, or just the source we use.

But we've hit 577,552 HTML characters, from what Notepad++ is telling me.

In any case, maybe not using tables in the folders, is the answer?

Use something that's more code-cheap?

But, then we'd have to change the other pages too?

Also, why are those Recap pages, instead of just On The Rocks subpages?

... Maybe set the breakpoints to every 50 episodes, if we're determined to stick to that HTML intensive table format?

Quotes.Villainous Breakdown just gave the red overly long warning.

This ATT proposed splitting it into subpages like Quotes.Villainous Breakdown Video Games, but I don't think we've ever split pages like that.

My personal opinion is that too many quotes convey anger but not the loss of cool that is this trope, or we should limit it to one per character (different versions of a character can be kept) to limit it to the best examples.

Admittedly, this does seem to be the first time in which a Quotes page gets too long, so we never really had any concrete rules on how to split those, but splitting to pages like Quotes.Villainous Breakdown Video Games seems like the best way to do it to me (of course, if anyone else has a better one, they should say it). There always has to be a first time.

Of course, if we're talking about removing multiple quotes from the same character, then I've currently noticed two cases of this: Hades from Hercules and Hans from Frozen.

Spoiler markup appears on Quotes.Villainous Breakdown 127 times, so cutting down on it and putting a short notice on the page does seem to be a good short-term solution. And yeah, the amount of potholes is also a bit too high, so reducing those would also work great. Let's go with that.
