Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning
Edited by kory on Dec 18th 2023 at 2:36:21 AM
The numbering system applies to the entire series, not the individual games. It's good to organize the pages by game, but I think the titles should be accurate. An uninformed person might wonder where the Characters.Super Smash Bros Melee 9 To 12 page is otherwise.
Characters.Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magical Girls is 460 KB. Is it large enough to warrant a page split?
If so, all the character profiles look long enough to give them all separate pages (though especially so for Madoka and Homura).
Edited by JRads47 on Sep 18th 2018 at 8:03:09 AM
Now it's 464 KB. I would wait a little bit... It's huge, but not quite excessive. I generally think 500 KB is the point where it becomes too much.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)Okay, it appears that the too long page warning has not been removed with this update! In fact, the treshold was for max size apparently raised a bit. I suppose that means we really don't need to rush when we want to split pages anymore and rely on blind guesses. So yeah, let's just split pages when the too long page warning shows up.
Currently mostly inactive. An incremental game I tested: https://galaxy.click/play/176 (Gods of Incremental)I'm not sure if this should go here since the pages themselves technically aren't too long, but the Recap pages for Sonic Boom episodes are way, way too long for what they're meant to do to the point that I'm unsure how to condense them. (And they're also nattery. Each episode is only about 24 minutes long.
Exhibit A: Recap.Sonic Boom S 2 E 52 Eggman The Video Game Part 2 The End Of The World
Here's another Recap page with a detailed episode for comparison, which is about a third that size.

The Protomen enhanced my life.I've never done proper page size searches so I don't know if the results are reliable, but the https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Characters/PokemonGenerationITangelaToMew
page has almost hit the limit according to one of the size checkers I've put it through. Can someone with more experience and knowledge please confirm or deny this?
Either way, whether it really is this close to the limit or not, I think glitchmons should be removed from the page. They are unofficial, "fake" Pokémon that only got their "popularity" from fans, so adding info about them is completely useless and bloats up the page for nothing.
Edited by totoofze47 on Oct 13th 2018 at 5:02:52 PM
It's not too long (if it was, there would be a warning that said "Warning: This article is too long. It needs to be split into multiple pages." if you clicked the edit button. It doesn't appear, so it's technically not breaking the limit. It is very large, though. However, I agree that glitchmons should not be on official characters pages. They should be moved to Characters.Pokemon Glitches. A split like this would show people they're not official. I don't think they should be cut completely because people like troping them for fun, and they're ultimately not fan creations, since they do exist in the game. Their existence is just unintentional.
What would be on the page:
- Missingno., 'M and 3TrainerPoké ₽ (Ketsuban and Iyazo)
- 'M (Anedepami) and Q ◣
- h POKé (Amu)
- Probably a bunch of other glitchy stuff from Gen I that doesn't have folders yet, like ZZAZZ or OPKMN4X
- Bad Egg
- Maybe other glitchmons
I plan on making Sandbox.Pokemon Glitches to show what such a page could look like.

Remove bolding on trope names, trim pictures, and trim entries?

I took a Hedge Trimmer to that page and took out a significant chunk of Word Cruft and Bold Inflation. What I did wasn't as thorough as it could be, and it wasn't enough to take away the warning, but at least it'll lighten the burden for the next Hedge Trimmer who wants to take a whack at paring down that page.
Any input on the Sonic Boom pages? They have a severe Signal-to-Noise Train Wreck issue.

The Protomen enhanced my life. And it looks like Characters.Chivalry Of A Failed Knight is getting too long.
He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself.I took another Hedge Trimmer whack at Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury. Again, it wasn't enough.
If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight. So, I've been slowly chipping away at that
page and a few things occurred to me.
- I'm starting to think the scope of shortening that page is probably beyond what one person can do, especially now that I've tallied 1,191,165 letters in the HTML source. I can keep slowly chipping away at it as long as I have both spare time and gung ho at the same time, but I'd appreciate some help.
- I re-read the pinned post's programmer whine about servers crashing when a too-long page is saved. At least I'm not a nimrod pounding the save key over and over again, but I do have a question. I try to save my work of shortening that page just before each of my designated edit locks expires. Is it worth taking the more frequent risk of crashing a server to avoid the risk of what happens when my edit lock expires and someone else makes an edit before I click "save"?

If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight. You could copy the page out into a txt file, change that, and copy-paste it in when you've done all your edits.
Follow the page, so you know if you need to make any changes.
Or request that it be locked?

I did a trial run of your advice (except for the lock request which I don't know how to do) — I made a saved txt file of the page to work on until I got to a removal that was more noteworthy than my previous removals. It's good advice — I was able to do more paring down at my leisure with less stress. The only minor drawback was that replacing the page with the new contents of my txt file made a humongous entry in the page's history record.
Well, it seems it's because you're stacking tons of small edits all at once. At least the change system is good, and not saying you've utterly replaced everything on the page.
Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576Yeah, I'm glad the change system noted that. I'm an English major, so getting rid of superfluous words without changing the content is something I've had lots of practice in. But since I've never watched the show, I can't axe the forest, I'm stuck pruning individual trees. Hopefully eventually I'll get some help from a fan of the show. In the meantime, at least the page is slowly getting shorter.
If not for this anchor I'd be dancing between the stars. At least I can try to write better vampire stories than Twilight. Here's my idea: Why not split Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury to three shorter pages? There are nine jurors, so three pages for three would probably be fitting. Like Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 01 To 03, Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 04 To 06 and Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 07 To 09? After a split, I am sure the page would stop being too long, and you wouldn't need to work on trying to make it smaller anymore. Are you okay with this course of action? If so, I can do it soon.

I don't see why not — that would indeed accomplish the goal of this thread, getting rid of the "too long" page warning. Me being the English major that I am, I'll still want to get rid of Word Cruft, but that can be done regardless of whether or not the page gets split. Lemme update my progress, then you can have at it.
Edit: Mickoonsley 19 is editing Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury — the edit lock expires at 9:20.
Edit again: I made it to a stopping point and synchronized my changes. Knock yourself out.

- Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 01 To 03: 426K+ characters.
- Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 04 To 06: 324K+ characters.
- Characters.Big Brother 19 The Jury 07 To 09: 510K+ characters, but no too long warning.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman(Elaboration on SeptimusHeap's post) Pasted into Google Docs, the Headscratchers for The Flash (2014) numbers 408,455 characters - this is in definite need of splitting.

UPDATE: I can't delete the Mario folder off that page due to an edit lock conflict. Will have to wait 20 more minutes.
