Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.
It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine
They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.
I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Explanation of what triggers the too-long page warning
Edited by kory on Dec 18th 2023 at 2:36:21 AM
Looks like season 6 takes up about half the page, so I'd split it into Funny. The Simpsons Season 6 and Funny. The Simpsons Seasons 7 To 8 (or Funny. The Simpsons Seasons 7 And 8 to match Funny. The Simpsons Seasons 4 And 5)
Ambiguity Index just lagged when I was saving an edit. Is its length causing issues for anyone else?
Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576Well, not much has changed since the last time you brought it up; it's only 5 KB longer than when I checked it then.
ImageSource.Webcomics is lagging for me too, anyone else?

Number 1 CGI Fireman Sam defenderWhat happens if we make ShoutOut.Fan Works Subpages for, well, listing the subpages?
Otherwise, splitting off Crossovers in general to their own page might do it?

Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576That could help. My latest "make a new page to move examples to" attempt got rid of the warning, but I have a feeling it'll come back soon.
Number 1 CGI Fireman Sam defenderShoutOut.Absolute Trust is even shorter than the Thomas And Friends folder, so either Absolute Trust is too short to be a subpage, or Thomas And Friends should be one too.

Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576A bit, yeah. I split off the three biggest sections: Girl Genius, Penny Arcade, and the Ménage à 3 universe (60+ examples each).
Characters. The Adventures Of Teddy Ruxpin has the warning. Before I add any more to it, should I just split it by the main sections?
Clean it first. An Aesop isn't a Character Trope, for one thing.

Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576Right. Thanks.
Edit: After the cleanup, the warning is gone, although it's still a long page.

Characters.Battletech Specific Mechs Inner Sphere has the warning.
Art Museum Curator and frequent helper of the Web Original deprecation projectSplitting off anything other than Superheavy probably would do it, since Superheavy only has 3 mechs, unlike the rest.

THE GOLDEN AGE WILL RETURN AGAIN!https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Website.TheOnion - Mass deletion of easily contextable ZCE-s isn't a good way to fix the warning, right?
I say "easily contextable" because someone just has to read a short article and think?
Disambig Needed: Help with those issues! tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13324299140A37493800&page=24#comment-576N-Z is significantly shorter but still big enough that switching to a three-way split is probably justified.
Reality Subtext has the warning.
she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportAh-hrm. The description doesn't seem to quite get at what I would expect that page to be given the title. Some of the examples do, but the page quote doesn't. The two largest folders (pushing the HTML size of my sandbox to over 200 KB when copied over) are currently Live-Action TV and Live-Action Film, but the page should definitely be cleaned for misuse for Real Life Writes the Plot and other similar things first.
Editing Award-Bait Song turns up a suggestion to split it up, if no one else already reported on this here.
Characters. The Adventures Of Teddy Ruxpin is triggering the warning. I'd check it for misused tropes and anything that doesn't fit a character page, but if that's not a major problem, the Main Trio is the biggest section other than "others", though the others are within 20 KB of it.
Back in September, I had commented about The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess having hit the size limit. I was told to move the character-dependent tropes to the Characters tab, which had eased the size for almost one year. However, the page grew to the limit once again, and this time the split will be inevitable because the aforementioned character tropes remain in the appropriate tabs (and the tropes added ever since aren't character-based).
Would it help to split between A-to-L and M-to-Z, similar to Skyward Sword?
135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300Yes it would.
Speaking of Zelda games, I am also in favour of splitting the trope page for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Kirby is awesome. It hasn't gotten the size warning yet, though.
I won't be surprised if it does eventually, since the predecessor's page Breath of the Wild already had to be split before.
EDIT: I have split the Twilight Princess page into two, albeit with a slightly different alphabetic distribution since A-to-L was actually too unevenly heavy in relation to M-to-Z (I had noticed when checking the sizes with an online character counter). The subpages are:
- TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess.Tropes A To J (157191 characters)
- TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess.Tropes K To Z (136596 characters)

135 - 169 - 273 - 191 - 188 - 230 - 300
Ideally, I'd change the ranges to be seasons 1-4, 5-6, and 7-8, but I'm not sure how much that'd be worth the effort.
