There was a time when we didn't have oil and electricity to power our vehicles.
Do you mean coal-powered trains? I did cover coal in our "what-if". Otherwise I'm blanking. There's also the issue of how fast can we convert our economy to accommodate this setback, how many coal-powered trucks do we have sitting around and how much time and money would it take to mass produce them?

How fast can the Pony Express deliver a message with today's roads, I wonder...

If the circumstances made it neccesary, I'm sure that a war-time footing would get some of this up and running again.
You haven't said how

And I still doubt the wizarding worlds ability to carry out such a massive attack.
You haven't said why

No one's ever killed one, though. And if was something as simple as fire, someone should have done so by now.

Magical or not, people can be stupid and not try simple thing.

Even if they can be killed, why not use them as a distraction while the wizards do whatever they need to quickly? Why not apparate a troll or a dragon into the White House? Why not 10 trolls at once?

Yeah, but something as simple as fire? Doubtful.

Use your imagination! Stop making me use my brain for you! >:(

Because by every indication in the books, the wizarding population is very small.

@ Kino: Moving the goalposts now? >:O

idea Would saying "Accio President" work?

Use your imagination! Stop making me use my brain for you! >:(
... there's something wrong with this statement but I can't put my finger on it o__O

You'd need a lot of wizards to stop all fuel production on the East Coast alone. And this doesn't account for oil and stuff that hasn't been dug up yet.

Well I doubt the president would stay in his most know location if we were threatened by people with the ability to pop in and out.

That being said I'm sure accio would work just as well as the gov. Googling Hogwarts.

Why didntcha just say that at the beginning though, Kino?

@ Schol: True.

Now I wonder how many people a wizard can Imperius at once.

Another thing: the shield charm can deflect physical objects. It is possible to enchant articles of clothing to provide a constant effect. There's also the time, in the movie at least, where Dumbledore turns falling glass shards to sand with a shield spell.

I think with this in mind, it's safe to assume you could indeed effectively make a wizard immune to conventional firearms.

Then you follow that up with Accio Firearms...

Where was it said that shield charms work on physical objects? It might just be that only Dumbledore can do it, 'cos he's hax and stuff.

I was going by the Harry Potter wiki, which claims they do. That info might be wrong, but I think it's safe to assume there are such spells.

Before I go, just wanted to throw one more thing in: So far we've pretty much been talking wizards vs. the US. How would wizards vs. Third World country without all the fancy tech and money go? Could wizards take over say, Central Asia and control the place with puppet regimes (possibly with the imperius curse)? What about India   *

or Pakistan, both of whom have nuclear weapons? (EDIT: They don't necessarily have to aim them at the US either; what are the US's major trading partners?) Is there any area of the world besides Europe that would affect the United States very badly if it were to be destabilized?

Because its fun

Because by every indication in the books, the wizarding population is very small.

The British population is.

But look at how many people turned up to the Quidditch World Cup.

Then consider that;

not everyone likes Quidditch;

and there were only so many tickets.

So the population is even larger than that.

Still tiny, but not ridiculously so.

That's asuming said wizard doesnt catch a bullet to the head as soon as he pops in. Assuming the pres. is not a decoy? I'm sure there'll be 5 SS guys tagging along for the ride.

Only four, if one of the SS guys is Kingsley Shacklebolt under polyjuice, the original being transfigured into a bedside table, in his bedroom.

And even if the President is captured or killed that doesn't leave the country headless. Off the top of my head at least three presidents have been assasinated but the country got on fine.

But none of them were forced to secretly do a Heel–Face Turn / Face–Heel Turn by Imperius, casted by a SS guy.

Hmmmm.

Do you think the Muggles would have any way of protecting against the Imperius?

I imagine it would be easy to figure out if an authority figure starts acting out of character, though I doubt you could protect yourself.

Also, on the apperation business, I forgot the simplest method: teleporting the magical equivalent of a bomb to the target. I imagine it wouldn't be out of the question to enchant something to go off with a blasting curse.

I gotta wonder what would happen if the wizards through open a door in the Department of Mysteries and let the Power of Love out. Would they be able to harness it to use against their enemies, or would it be a case of Wild Magic?
