So, yeah, instead of a controller belt and Zapper, this "Kevin" (not sure I'd actually use any characters from the show) would instead have an evolving set of equipment based on the NES and its accessories, with copious gags related to development and issues said peripherals had.

For example, the Power Glove would be a Power Fist created by someone unrelated to the main cast, and in fact be a Deadly Upgrade that not only injures Kevin when it's used, but also is very difficult to operate.

He'd have a full NES backpack, and instead of having Mega Man and Simon as constant traveling companions, he can instead summon two allies at a time. The Zapper would be more conventional in terms of power, and wouldn't shut down whenever convenient. The controller might still be belt mounted, though the implication here is that it's simply the controls for the backpack which provides the powers.

And of course, there'd be numerous Mid Season Upgrades to coincide with the Console Wars. Captain N isn't the only hero in town, for one thing. There'd also be a Master System themed hero at the onset. But for Kevin, he'd of course upgrade to a SNES and Super Scope eventually. The eventual Sony hero would probably start making a Doomed Upgrade for him, but gets blown off and eventually starts out on his own. The Virtual Boy would be another Deadly Upgrade to boost what would be at that point the aging SNES hardware, but the whole set would get soundly thrashed in the next fight, with a brief Time Skip to the N64 generation with the explanation that the Saturn hero and Playstation hero have been picking up the slack in his absence.

And it's just keep going like that, with the Sega hero eventually falling completely and an Xbox hero entering the stage. By the Wii generation, Keven would be able to use the Wii Remote as a Shapeshifter Weapon.

Now, one thing I also picture here is that a console's controller slots would determine how many allies could be summoned at once, though I'm not sure how Online gaming would effect this yet. The N64 and Gamecube are also proving a bit challenging with how to depict a weapon for them. I think I could fudge the N64 into a gun, held with only the middle handle, but I have no idea how to hand the Gamecube controller.

I'm also still deciding on how the villains should progress. I have it in mind that the Space Pirates from Metroid would be the chief antagonist at first, though, and have subjugated-slash-recruited a few other villains as well.
