I liked the review in that Chuck went after the mechanical flaws in the narrative.
When old farts like me complain about Cumber-Khan, it's not about how this movies does anything to "Wrath of Khan", it's the fact that it's a rip-off.
Plus the film kept trying to keep it a "bugh seekrt" in true JJ Abrams style. Mr. "Audiences like to be surprised" and his "Mystery Box" formula failed this film because there were no surprises.
Beyond at least tried to keep up the suspense and provided some justification for the villain acting all crazy. It was still dull. Jaylah was nice, but really you could drop in any other stock Green-Skinned Space Babe from Trek or Star Wars and get the same result.
Sofia Boutella is MUCH better than the material she's been getting. I hope she gets some good scripts soon.
I tried to walk like an Egyptian and now I need to see a Cairo practor....For the record, the super ship is called the USS Vengeance.
Which sounds way more like a name for a Star Destroyer.

The tragedy of the latest film was that the initial momentum of the Abrams Trek was long gone by the time it came out, and the problems of Into Darkness in combination with questionable marketing likely meant there was a decent portion of the Trek audience weren't interested in seeing it either.
Thus Beyond under performed, I think coming too late for moviegoers once excited for the Kelvinverse, and having too little appeal for fans unconvinced it would be any different from films they might have been lukewarm about to begin with
Into Darkness remains my favorite of the films.
Ultimately, Beyond is my least favorite as it sweeps the other films under the rug. No Louise Marcus, no Khan, no fallout from the timeline changes, no Vulcan acknowledgement (except for poor Ambassador Spock), and no Klingons.
I loved the Kelvinverse and it made it clear they didn't care about its continuity or story.
So I have 0% interest in seeing another film.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. The only problem I have with the review is he failed to go into exactly how much of a ripoff it actually was.
The plot is almost a wholesale ripoff of the novel 'Dreadnought', in which an admiral builds a dreadnought to combat the Klingons and intent on using it to soft Coup the Federation too if needed. However it gets stolen and the Enterprise gets involved with recapturing the dread and ends up fighting the Admiral and several ships loyal to the Admiral with the people who stole the ship.
The big climax of the book actually banks completely on Kirk being a smart captain instead of an action hero. The fallout from the book was the Beta canon reason for why Kirk got promoted to admiral, all the officers that were supporting the coup were arrested and Starfleet was massively short handed leading up to TMP.
It pretty much was everything the movie wishes it could be.

Seems to be resolved.
A lot of people don't know this, but Cars is a ripoff of Doc Hollywood
.
But Pixar did manage to make a film I wanted to watch. Even if they have gotten away with a blatant rip-off and a movie that Tastes Like Diabetes.
The ripoff thing with Into Darkness didn't bother me so much as it being a re-tread and Roberto Orci's drinking the truther kool-adie.
That Orci et al. may have ripped off a Star Trek book
doesn't surprise me. Look at his work on the "Bayformers" film series.

The first season of DIS wraps up. Chuck conveys a sense of mild disappointment with the outcome.

SF Debris did an excellent Babylon 5 three-fer.
True story - among the B5 fandom, "Green! Purple!" was Memetic Mutation after "A Geometry of Shadows"
Well, on rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5 there was this one fan who posted about his friend with the last name of "Green" that was on his campus B5 fan club.
His roommate was tagged with the nickname "Purple" - due to being his roomie and the Like an Old Married Couple arguments they had. "Purple" hadn't seen B5 and wondered what the hell this was about.
Oh, he was called "Purple" for months until his roommate showed him B5 (starting with "A Geometry of Shadows"). "Purple" had a good laugh and was hooked.

Actually, due to the premise and themes present, there's a whole lot that could be said about Mortal Coil; Chuck just doesn't want to because he hates Neelix so much, so the review is made up predominantly of him teasing that there's lots for him to talk about but stopping short to say "Nope, it's Neelix, so it I won't."
Felt like a bit of a cop-out, to be honest.

The review is up.
No actual score given, but he compares it unfavorably to Nemesis of all things, so I think we could pencil in a provisional 0/10.
