The original Deus Ex was set in 2052.

Human Revolution was set in 2027.

2052-2027=25.

...The tranq dart crossbow in Deus Ex 1 was really bad. Like, sometimes it would take a minute for someone to go to sleep. And there wasn't really a headshot option with it.

Meanwhile the Tranq Rifle in DXHR worked in seconds, was quiet, and was a viable option that made being non-lethal satisfying but still a challenge via calculating arc and ammo.

I didn't have many problems using the mini-crossbow for head shots. Just get good at shooting pistols and bob's your uncle. Just pop your smaller reticle'd sight on the head of your victim and pull the trigger.

Getting headshots isn't the problem. It's the fact that headshots take forever to knock them out and will alert every other enemy to your presence when the target starts shooting at you that's the problem.

Headshots with the mini-crossbow don't actually seem to do anything.

I've seen them instantly drop NSF guys (at least) when I've used the tranq dart rounds.

Y'all talk about weapons in DX sucking compared to HR like you don't understand the concept of nanomachines (comma son).

Shouldn't the non-lethal weapons provide a good service at being non-lethal instead of taking several shots from the stun prod to knock out one guy?

[up][up]You can take down people with one hit of the riot prod on a consistent basis if you aim it well. And like all weapons, skill level affects your ability to do so.

I'll look into that. But I don't think to many non-lethal takedowns are going to happen during my play through the game.

Also a fun thing I do is when I do go lethal in HR, I tend to leave at least one or two alive, roleplaying wise it's so that they will wake up and realize they were the only survivors.

Playing this game again with this mod:

https://www.dx-revision.com/

Makes it really pretty, but I'm not sure how much the gameplay is altered. Well, apart from moving a bloody useful Healing Robot thingy from Liberty Island and putting one. Single. Medpack. In its place. Which is crap, to be honest. Full disclosure: when I first downloaded it I forgot to install the original game first. [lol]

I'd still much prefer the original game to be remade with the Dawn Engine, even though this would preclude it being on the Xbox 360 and the like, it'd probably be able to run on the newer consoles.

^ Revision is a very mixed bag. As I noted in my review on ModDB:

"When I heard about this mod and tried it out, I found myself struck with a constant sense of "like this, don't like this". For every good decision in the game, there's something that feels needlessly complicated and not really true to the spirit of the game.

The changed levels in Revision feel way too busy for their own good. Hong Kong is now a sprawling series of areas that somehow feels expansive and hollow at the same time. There's some giant futuristic command center parked right in the middle of the MJ12 base under UNATCO. The Wall Cloud is now a confusing mess of corridors that feel at odds with the original level design. UNATCO itself feels like the first draft of a level vomited through production - impressively insular, cluttered and tedious to walk through.

I was also finding myself getting annoyed by the seemingly-haphazard relocation of areas, and having more questions than answers. Why does the Underworld Tavern have entrance AND exit stairwells located adjacent to each other? Why do I have to run into a building and climb down a ladder just to get to Smuggler's? Why move the temple in Hong Kong a fair distance to the corner of the map while the original building is still sitting there, usable, right beside the market? If JC is on the trail of Bob Page, why doesn't he try looking in the huge Page Industries Building that's located right next to Hell's Kitchen and can be seen during certain cutscenes? Why isn't the animation finished on the cutscene where Jock's helicopter is tractored into the Hong Kong MJ12 base? Half the levels have nothing changed, while others twist so much stuff around (poorly) that it becomes confusing and annoying as a result.

Not to mention that I've run into lots of bugs. Friendlies randomly attacking me for a few moments then going back to their normal behavior, enemies floating in the Jesus pose as I round a corner, then springing to life and attacking.

I'm not entirely sure how this is a remake, because half of the stages are exactly the same, and what's new is a mixed bag. For every Paris hub, there's something like the new intro cutscene (is it supposed to be a nod to the PS 2 Deus Ex: The Conspiracy intro?) For every decent addition to the stage, there's a level that's needlessly complicated."

You're better off playing GMDX, which actually integrates content much better and feels seamlessly woven in (plus most, if not all, of the cut content is there too).

[up]I'm happy enough with Revision to finish this run through. Some of the things are as crap as you've described them but I'm used to games that have layouts in them that don't make sense - World of Warcraft springs to mind - who ever designed Undercity needs to be slapped in the face with a wet kipper. I've made it all the way through to the bit where the Triads meet up for a truce in the temple in Hong Kong and there's not a single caused-by-me death of any human thingy yet in this save - though the enemies themselves have killed more than a few of their own side. [lol]

I wonder why I never liked the Pepper Gun/Riot Baton combo before? It has enabled me to even take down those Mi B bastards with the explosion-on-death booby trap, though it's not much use for non-lethal takedowns of those MJ 12 commando bastards. I've managed to drop those, of course, but it takes nearly a dozen Tranquilizer Darts from the Mini-Crossbow to pull off.

No-one else is playing? Oh well. Currently stooging around the vastly expanded VLCC Wall Cloud - it's a bit of a faff, to be honest. There is a lot of stuff to do and some of is is enjoyable but there is also a lot of busy work.

Still haven't killed anyone, despite the vast amount of deadly weapons I'm currently toting around with me, which is probably one of the reasons why it is being a faff.

[up][up] I've played through DX a good 15 times. Aside from Planescape, my most played game. So may have to get Revision - never really tried modded DX.

I'd kill for an improved version of DX 2 with larger maps though.

Finally finished that universe-be-damned VLCC Wall Cloud bit. Spent more time going round in circles than I did actually doing anything interesting. Problem is, it was like that in vanilla Deus Ex.

Oh. God. I hated that ruddy ship. My least favourite level as it was so samey and didn't FEEL like a super sneaky place. Perhaps cos it was too real, compared to the slums or cyberpunk feel of everywhere else.

Spent an unhappy few hours constantly getting killed by near invulnerable MJ 12 commandos in that short bit between the VLCC Wall Cloud and pissing off to Paris in Jock's helo, set in that Lower East Side cemetery, before I figured out that I didn't care anymore about playing fair and used the ghost cheat to go ethereal and started battering them with my Baton.

It's nearly impossible to sneak by them when you have no bioenergy to power the Cloak Aug, and I just gave up trying to do so. The heavies in Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are far more fair in terms of how you can take them out non-lethally.

The Wall Cloud section smacks of being a level that was changed partway through production. Not only because there are remnants of a prior plot in them (unused dialogue shows that the Chinese soldiers could be friendly towards you, likely if you were taking the "loyal to UNATCO" path), but also because it appears that the design was changed somewhat midway through development.

I verily believe that the weird, futuristic corridor with the Spider-Bots you can travel through (right beside the giant fan near the top of the main shipyard building) was a remnant of the scrapped Moon level that was spliced in as an attempt to utilize pre-built content. Similarly, the weird detached corridor/room with the aug upgrade canister and GEP Gun (which is accessed by making a jump off the valves in the bilge pump room) was originally intended to connect correctly with the rest of the level.

I have been told that GMDX added a secret crypt/easter egg level underneath Dowd's hideout in the cemetery, but I was unable to find it when I played it two days ago.

I'm now in Paris, having found out I can beat MJ 12 commandos in the open if there's just one of the bastards, without cheating by using the ghost command, but if they come in packs it's just that much less annoying to use it and batter their faces in with the Baton. The layout of the city is massively different in Revision, BTW, so many different streets and alleyways to go down and get utterly lost in if you aren't careful, but since the only enemies top-side are commandos and robots (and lots of them) it's a hassle trying to take them out non-lethally/quickly.
