Anyone else find themselves mentally Trope-ing?

I went to see Tangled today, and as awesome and engaging as it was I kept thinking about all the examples I wanted to add to its page when I got home! I was writing out examples in my head! Ditto now that I've started reading The Dresden Files; I'll pause mid read to compose an example! Does anyone else experience this? Is this TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life in action?

Yup. When you get to the point where it takes 3 hours to watch an hour-and-a-half DVD because you keep pausing it to make examples entries, you are in Stage IV.

Stage V ... well, let's just say that Stage V is the really scary stage.

Is stage V the one where you can gain the full experience of watching a movie just by looking at the poster?

Well, that's one of the symptoms. Another is making six entries in the Film Posters trope the poster fits into while you are mentally watching the film.

I fully admit to having engaged in Stage IV as early as yesterday, with a My Little Pony release, no less. :D

I think I'm currently a class III. I can point out a couple tropes, but only ones that are obvious in movies.

as for neopets... class V. hands down.

I've been in stage IV for a while though I think I maybe in stage VI cause I've began to trope reality.

i do this all the time. it's an instinctual reaction by now, i think. tongue

re: OP— i totally get what you mean about The Dresden Files. that series leaves and breathes on tropes, to the point where i'm sure jim butcher must visit this site a lot. those books are single-handedly to blame for a large percentage of my latest YKKTW entries.

Obviously there's an actual stage list. If you were a serious enough case to be on it, you would have found it by now.

No there isn't:p

Actually, that question is one of the primary symptoms of Stage II.

Sometimes I do this. I let this happen sometimes, but other times I just tell my brain to stop doing that when I just want to enjoy the work. It obeys.

Re: carla

That's so true! Luckily all the books have been pretty well listed already or I'd be here for hours! Well, more hours anyway.

I'm probally at stage one. I know a fair number of tropes, and I use trope names in conversation, but I don't notice all the tropes while watching something. Also I don't usually add examples, but that's because I get distracted reading other tropes. It is unlikely I will reach the stage of editing tvtropes WHILE watching a movie. I did notice Is That What They'reCallingItNow in Order of the Stick, and found the example already added.[lol]
