So, my protagonist (middle school aged) is targeted for a game of Keep Away by 3 (or more) people for his backpack and its contents. I usually hate how this trope is played out and am thinking of ways to play it out how I'd play it out in real life.

I'm thinking about the following scenarios and their routes, but debating each one:

  • Steal something that belongs to the antagonists. From there
    • Try (and fail) to negotiate without incident
    • Sell it
      • to them and try and have some deterrence via safety in numbers, if possible
      • to anyone that shows interest

  • Unable to reach for the backpack, brutalize the next person who throws the backpack out of his grasp and
    • Lure the rest into attacking him while he's distracted
    • let them run away so he can brutalize further without interruption.
      • Keep the abandoned thug

What route should I go through?

      • Keep the abandoned thug
        • as a bargaining chip to negotiate
        • as a way to let off steam for the items lost.
        • so that Defeat Means Friendship

The options I feel would be best are bolded. The "selling the antagonist's stuff to anyone" option could lead to numerous interesting results. The "blowing off steam on the thug" option could potentially say a lot about the character in a short amount of time. The "Defeat Equals Friendship" route seems a bit cliched, but with enough justification as to why they are becoming friends, could work. Might be a bit of a risk, but it could be a risk you want to take. That's up to you.

My Dad used the 'beat up the guy who just threw it' option in his rough school when people tried to do keep away with his stuff. I found that acting like I didn't care about the thing and waiting for them to drop it and walk away worked for me.

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

I think I really like 'Lure them into attacking while he's distracted because he can either grab his backpack and run with a quick dodge (though this WILL lead to a chase), or beat up everyone with some good prioritizing and zoning and grab his backpack and leave.

I'd have to think real hard about what the stolen and sold item would be.

I thought up of another scenario: the protagonist going through with Brutalize thug and when the others run off, he goads the thug into punching him (and leaving a mark) so that he can effectively pull off a Wounded Gazelle Gambit just as well as they can.

This, in turn, brands him as both a brilliant tactician and a cheap bastard, which will build up to further fights.

This is perfect for our protagonist.
