Grant cocked an eyebrow, "Are you not seeing the same place I am, kid? you seem extremely lax for having been given a mansion... albeit temporarily." he added with a dismissive tone. "The point is, I'm happy, and a happy Grant is better than a... Somber, brooding, angsty, all-too-serious Grant when he's not on the job." He turned to Selene, "Now now, no need to... to think about this too heavily. Just do what you did today again and no one else will be the wiser. Though a mute soldier would be odd... would be odd indeed..."

"Mute soldiers are their preferred sort. I've no intention of joining this game of petty duchies seeking more gold with which to adorn their robes, I followed only to give my parting words to my companions. But Lo! Where have my companions gone? Even the Horsewit has fallen silent, in their stead I am left with mercen'ry sheep. Thief, White Knight, you alone still stand. I bless you both, thief, may your sharp eyes find fault in the flawed that you may seek elusive truth in all her glory. White one, you hold the Begnion meekness that I had long ago grown to detest but you at very least temper it with just fury. To you, I shall give you a reminder; this is not our final parting, not so long as I draw breath shall I break a promise. Your kin shall be free. Perhaps if the Brute had wits to match his tongue, he would see more merit in me, instead his head points squarely at the Empress, but their is some nobility in such simple minded loyalty and so I shall wish him a dignant life and death as a forsaken hound of a forgotten Goddess. Hold these blessing dear as they are derived from a mirthful and giving hermit who has vowed to sunder the heavens." And with that Sarath departed, wearing the same robe and carrying the same book he had when he had began with only the wounds to show for his travels.

"Milord, Kurt lends his support."

"It is an interesting development, especially considering I had asked for none" Aldric sighed as he walked through the hall of servants, "Stall for the time being. I shall not refuse him but I shall not accept him either. In spite of my distaste for him and all his "plans", the 'mastermind' should at very least he should know to hold for the time being until a victor is clear. I pray he does not confuse friendship for a coup. If he charges against any man but Duke Hargrave he charges alone. But regardless, I care not for what maneuvers he may make alone cackling over a chess board, with his delusions of grandeur. There is much preparing, the vanguard has already begun the march. Duke Canas and Duke Fenrir have pledged us a hundred men each, more shall come and are likely making the march already, the council is bearing its fruits."

"I could act the part of a shy soldier... Efficient but soft spoken and obedient. Some nobles like that in their troops"

"It's just that I get a little nervous... it was our first meeting after all. Still... nobody seemed to recognize me, so I guess I should be a little more confident. Do not worry though, I'll try not to let my insecurities affect my judgement and efficiency"

Kurt very well knew what he was doing, and decided to stall for time and keep that boy in place, where he would be scrutinized by everyone yet more. For now, he just needed the mercenaries to learn of this somehow.

Good riddance... is all Grant could think after Sarath's departure. "Excuse me for trying to see the good in people" he mumbled. Grant knew all too well what it meant to trust in someone, but he could always fend for himself if their trust was unwarranted in the end.

Liam smiled. "Alright, how about this. I'll go on ahead, see what I can do about this thing that's been contacting us. If I happen to be in the vicinity when I get attacked, as I undoubtably will, I would highly appreciate a bit of magickal cover fire, if you're free to do so, Athena. Spartan, you stay back here with the kids, and keep them safe. Andrea, I've got no idea whether you would rather assault or defend, so it's up to you. But choose fast, because I want to move as quickly as I can. Any objections? I honestly think destroying this thing is our best bet. At the very least, it will make the rest of them more reckless. Like you said yourself, it might drive them into a frenzy. And frenzies usually involve running onto our weapons." He scuttled up the wall, cracked from the battle, and surveyed the scene. "Looks to be a few squads of the things between here and the stairs down, but I think I can make it through. There seem to be a few holes, and I can always punch one otherwise. Spartan, if things go sour, there's a narrow hallway not too far from here you can choke with."

Just then, the soldiers who had followed them to the mansion walked in. "Sorry we weren't able to help you fight the first part of that battle, we forgot we were here!" they said. "We'll help in any way we can."

"You forgot you... How could you forget something as obvious as that?!" Spartan demanded, ignoring Athena's muttered "What." He turned to Liam. "I'd like to send someone with you, but I doubt anyone besides myself could keep up, and I need to stay with the others. If you find yourself having difficulty, fall back and call us. We'll work on clearing this floor out in the meantime." He looked around. "Is that an acceptable compromise?"

Athena nodded, though still speaking a little flatly from the soldiers' proclamation. "Sounds good to me, Grampa."

Andrea gave a blank stare to the soldiers who decided they existed. "Great..." she muttered. Turning her attention to Liam, "If you seriously think you can do this, then I'll tag alongside you. if there's gonna be another fight, it's gonna be on my terms. So..." She said as she readied her weapon and shield, "Whenever you're ready, kid."

Liam dropped to the floor. He stuck his tongue out at Andrea, quite the undignified expression for one his age, and smiled softly. "I'm ready now, of course. The real question is, can you keep up, old woman?" He laughed lightly as he rushed ahead, ready to dodge and weave his way to the basement, or stand and fight if needs be.

Sarath continued along his march his march, he entered another small town. The rumours of bandits had once more not deterred him. He stood upon the center of the town, and spoke to the small crowd that had followed him and assembled about the hermit.

"Beorc! You grow tired and complacent. Even those who once had the strength to shape rocks and forge the continent in your own image! Have you forgotten your own strength? Your arms once forged this continent yet now they fall limp and offer empty praise to the Goddess! The Goddess has died! Her continent has died! Before you are not her trees or her animals, but your houses! The Goddess is dead and you have killed her! Is there one among you so brave as take responsibility? To build your own legacy? Or shall you weep over the legacy which you have long ago sundered and deny all that which you have created? Tell me Beorc! Where is your strength? Where is your pride? The Goddess has fallen and yet you remain standing aimlessly. Your vision is what allowed you to claim this earth, and now heaven's throne lies vacant. Is there not so much as a vestigial ambition amongst you?"

It seemed the monsters allowed Liam to pass, mostly because he was one person, and because Grandmother ordered them to attack any further people. As Liam ran through the mansion, it slowly became more and more filled with a rotting stench and many corpses, Aerion's men, on the floor.

Andrea kept pace right behind Liam, pondering how she was going to hurt him for calling her old for a moment then focusing on the monstrosities around her and avoiding them.

"Hey, we're here! Did you notice us?" a tall soldier asked. A smaller, stocky soldier elbowed him in the stomach. "What my friend means is, don't you think it would be wise to send at least one of us along with the two of them? A single, inexperienced soldier and a rogue are putting themselves in serious danger by splitting from the group in a place like this."

As soon as people started to follow Liam, the creatures stormed at them, oddly letting Liam continue forward, almost as if testing him.

"Do either of you think you're strong enough to make much difference against these things?" Spartan asked rhetorically. "Honestly, while I'm still uncertain how far the girl can go, I'm confident in Liam's abilities. He should be able to keep her alive long enough to get us, if it comes to that."

"Grampa, I still don't like letting them go alone..."

"I know. I don't like it either, but I doubt we could stop them. Besides, they've already left."

Six creatures surrounded Spartan and Athena, and readied their sword blades. Large scorpion-like ones flanked these ones.

Grandmother seemed to be happily waiting for her "guests", as she put it. Her butler was preparing a meal for Liam, and she smirked as much as her bloated, corpse-like face allowed, "Merely because I am a horrific creature does not mean impoliteness is acceptable..."

Aldric stood before the castle of Duke Tanas, Gilroy beside him. He had taken the bulk of his forces, left behind garrison enough to endure siege for perhaps two weeks against a large force, more likely one. With him as well were the two dozen or so banners of smaller Earls who had offered open support, some of whom saw fit to accompany him to the cast of Duke Tanas. Gilroy bore Aldric standard upon his spear, as well as smaller standards that had been pledge to them by the Earls. They had marched under cover of Darkness, not even allowing torches among their ranks. Should the enemy arrive by morning, they would be taken quite off guard by these forces.

"Milord?"

"I am nervous, Gilroy. It is to be expected. I shall be fine. You are here to reassure me after all."

"Yes, Milord. Hail him now."

"Yes... you are quite right. HAIL, I AM ALDRIC DUKE OF ASMIN, I COME TO SEEK THE COMPANY OF LORD TANAS. STIR HIM AND SEND HIM FORTH."

Surprised by the sudden movement, Andrea had to duck and weave past the monstrosities to keep up with Liam. The more the creature talked, the more Andrea drowned it out, and the better she was able to stifle the awful stench that seemed to hover around the place. "Liam! Dial it back, this isn't going to work out as you intended!" As I intended... she thought to herself. Why do I keep throwing myself into danger for this man?

Liam glanced back, and saw Andrea falling behind. He cursed softly, and looked ahead at the basement stairs. It took him less than a second to decide. "Sorry, guys, Andrea take precedence." He leapt, and kicked one of the creatures in the face, using the force to propel himself back towards Andrea. "Heh, that's one way to turn around." He slid under another creature, aand stod by Andrea. "Having troule keeping up? Fine, then. I've got an idea." He vaulted one of the creatures surrounding her, and punched it in the back wthout his weapon. It didn't seem to hurt, but it was only meant to get his attention. "Hey, uglies! Aren't I the one you want? Come on, go for a more challenging meal! I'm over here!" He was moving around, trying to distractthem. "Andrea, go!"

Alex tried to fight back his fear from being surrounded by the things. He tried focusing his magical energies again, trying once more to cast the thunder spell he'd been taught.

The three soldiers who had accompanied the party drew their lances and moved forward. "We won't let you down this time!"

"So, they want me to come out, instead of the other way around?" Duke Tanas was a bit suspicious. He brought Kenton and a pair of armored knights along with him. "I'm pleased to receive you, Duke Asmin. Won't you join me in my manor?"

"Most certainly, Lord Tanas. As a gesture of trust, my company and I shall leave our weapons at the gate," Lord Aldric bowed after dismounting, "You must excuse the size of it, however, these men are fellows who have become sympathetic to your cause and I had assumed you would not wish to spur your sponsors."

Gilroy took upon himself the duty of offering the horses and weapons to servants of Lord Tanas.

Aldric entered the mansion escorted by the Earls, thanking the servants and apologizing for his appearance as he went.

He bowed once more to Lord Dryden.

"If I still held my blade, I would pledge it you. I realize you have little love of formality, but it is for this reason that I march with you. Begnion has suffered too long the likes of Duke Seliora, he is a noble so enamored with nobility that he has forgotten his post.

I have grown tired of the childish games of treacherous Dukes, Duke Tanas. I wish for true co-operation, a true alliance, between us. As we fight between ourselves for this empty prestige, the people of Begnion, from Earl to Peasant, even we, suffer. Begnion is becoming old and decaying amongst our petty squabbles.

I pledge my support to you today for your service to the people who serve you. If you would but pledge the same to those who served their people or at very least Begnion, over their own petty ambition, then you could count upon my support tomorrow as well.

If you do so, you may call me Aldric, and ours shall be an immortal camaraderie baptized in fire. If not, then let it be said that Duke Asmin fought for the liberty of Tanas' people, but not her Duke."

"Very well. I accept you most generous offer, Duke Aldric." Dryden was a bit wary of starting any alliance where he was actually expected to show trust, but was willing to do it to defeat his hated enemy. He led Aldric and his forces into his mansion. "You and your men may stay here for the night, if that is acceptable. I'll have my servants prepare you a room, though we can speak further on the topic of Duke Hargrave now, if you wish. His forces will undoubtedly meet with mine by tomorrow."

"I have only recently entered peerage and not yet made the acquittance of Duke Seliora in person, but I know of his reputation. He is decadent, distant and possess all of the unwanted qualities of a true Noble. My fellow confirm and even assure me of this. This is what propels us against him." Aldric said, "If there is further information I shall hear it, but I need no further motivation."
