Rebuild of Evangelion

I'm not sure Shinji's had his epiphany yet. He seems to be in the same state he was after killing Kaworu in the original series: rock-bottom in terms of depression and self-esteem.

I do feel like Gendo's played out his hand at this point though. He still has Unit-13, but now he doesn't have anyone to pilot it, except maybe some more Rei clones in backup. How exactly does he expect to trigger Final Impact without Shinji?

I'm sure he'll find a way to make Shinji fuck up again.

Yeah, but this time, he's with a support network who've also escaped the awful doomsday cult with him. The biggest problem he had after killing Kaworu was that everyone around him was either dead, traumatised, or obsessed with their own impending doom. Asuka and Q probably won't save him, but they can at least show him a path to saving himself by example.

But all of them hate him, or at least are really conflicted about me (with anger being in the top seed for those conflicted feelings).

I don't think they'll care much about helping him.

See, if it was Mari dragging him throught the desert I could see Shinji having a fair shot at becoming remotely healthy; she's pretty much the only one who consistently has tried to support and advise him without grudge or ulterior motive, limited though their few interactions so far have been.

Asuka went out of her way to drag him along with them. She's angry at him, but she cares. As for Q, I don't think she has enough concrete opinions about the world to hate him, even if they got off on a really bad foot.

10 minute preview of Evangelion 1.0+3.0. Subtitled in French, but someone in the comments posted a rough English translation.

It looks like WILLE is in Paris, France to find repair parts for Units 02 and 08. Mari's fighting in Unit 08 jury-rigged with some emergency parts in the meantime. They get attacked by a force of Artifical Angels/Evas from NERV, types 44A, 44B, and 4444C. Mari is successful in fending them off... including literally picking up the Eiffel Tower and stabbing 4444C with it.

Here's the interesting part: when WILLE engages whatever their strange device is, it seems to reverse the effects of the Impact in a localized area by dispelling the "L-Field", restoring the city of Paris (not restoring the people, just the landscape). There's something I didn't know was possible.

Mari makes a comment at the end: "Wait for us, Little Puppy [Shinji]." Either they haven't picked up the trio from where the last movie ended, or they're in trouble.

Awesome!

All the awesome kaiju/giant mecha combat in the world wouldn't make up for how Anno screwed up with the direction he took the third Rebuild movie in.

... You know, I'm curious about how well-received (or not) Rebuild 3.0 was in Japan.

Much better than people would have you believe, I think. I've seen in before when Western fandoms think their opinions apply globally.

Anyway, complaints that this doesn't feel like Evangelion are already popping up. Me, I just think people are butthurt that Anno is changing the status quo.

Changing the status quo means what, his characters not drowning in an existential funk?

Or placing too much focus on fight scenes and technobabble over character interaction.

Some people just want their silly romcom with background angst.

Action Prologue is a thing.

2.0 had it too.

As I recall, the 10 minute preview of 3.33 was also a big fight scene like this... and then the movie ended up being 90% character-focused anyway.

I'm less concerned that this preview is indicative of the overall movie, and more thinking that I'm glad we've got some concrete evidence that the movie is in production.

Why do I get the feeling that Anno is gonna pair Shinji with Mari at the end just to mess with the fans?

Mari's already got a girlfriend. Shinji seems quite likely to end up with Sakura, if anyone.

Age difference is too great. Unless the no-aging thing can be undone, I don't see Shinji ever being paired with anyone.

Not that Anno ever cared about pairings, mind you.

Oh he did pair Shinji with Kaworu. Twice. We know how that ended up.

Showing the Eiffel tower destroyed and used as a screwdriver in the French premiere. Anno knows what we want.

But damn it's so weird to see a character having fun in Evangelion. It doesn't look half bad either, even with CG. I don't know how the poster managed to film the screening in such good quality though, as I'm pretty sure recording and photos were forbidden.

... Mari has a girlfriend?

This continues to be one of the most oddball anime titles ever and it looks like it will continue to feel like a dream you have on food poisoning.

No, Mari does not have a girlfriend, unless you count the Evas themselves. Iaculus is most likely joking about her and Asuka, or after this maybe Nagara, but Mari seems to give everyone nicknames, so that’s not exactly evidence of a relationship. Although in the manga verse she had a thing for Yui, but we still don’t know if that chapter has anything to do with Rebuild or not.

There is that photo◊ of a baby Shinji that had a girl that looked suspiciously like Mari. If this implies what I think it does, then Mari probably views him as a sort of nephew or step son, which would explain why she tries to get him out of his funk at several points.

She and Asuka are still the OTP tho'.

... K that would actually be a neat twist.

Also people had theorized her being the girl in that pic before the manga competed and had the extra chapter showing Mari went to the same college as Yui.
