No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here

Yeah, but that's a primarily a modelling thing rather than a game thing. It has benefits to the game, don't get me wrong, but GW sells models and they don't much care what you do with them past that.
The easiest way to gauge how much GW likes something is what models they're getting (and what the material of that model is)
I am Perfection. The enemy of GoodOn the Ynnari fizzling out, I think it rather stinks. The Aeldari had the illusion of forward momentum for the first time since I started paying attention and it fizzled out in the same release that started it. My guess is that the small release was a way to gauge interest and it didn't work out. In fact, I'd say the (still much needed) aspect warrior refresh is the other side of that happening now. If new Aeldari don't sell, we need to reinforce and bolster the older stuff. But here's the thing. I like the aspect warriors more than the Ynnari. They offered so little with the Ynnari release that I was unlikely to ever pick the models up. There was just no draw. Id be much more likely to pick up Harlequins, who had a larger release around the same time period. Problem is, I think their primary paint scheme is terrifying to think about, and whats the point of harlequins without harlequin checkerboards? Even then, I'd had to have been a longstanding collector of Aeldari (Im not) to prioritize them over wraithbone constructs and aspect warriors.

Speaking of Harlequins, I do wonder if at some point they'll have their own "avatar" unit for Cegorach. Though it'd be out of character for the Laughing God to openly fight Chaos that way.
Lore-wise, I guess you could justify it by Cegorach and the Harlequins deciding they need to up their game against Chaos since they can't count on Ynnead or the Ynnari doing everything for them.

Disgusted, but not surprisedPersonally I think the intent was to demonstrate how OP the Ynnari are, having powers over life and death that made it possible to bring Guilliman back. The lore also had Yvraine effortlessly doing something Ahriman never could — reverse the Rubric.
It's still kind of funny that the most significant impact the Ynnari had on the setting so far was bringing back one of the Imperium's champions.

Disgusted, but not surprisedOkay, I got an answer back from that person, and he felt that since the Ynnari's only major accomplishment was bringing back Guilliman, and then got overshadowed by the narrative by Space Marines, their plan foiled by the Deathwatch, and beaten up by a greater daemon or something, he felt GW only really cared about them was to sell models and as a vehicle to bring back Guilliman.
And since the Emperor's children got the lion's share of attention from GW for this round along with the downplaying of the Ynnari's relevance after their books failed, resulting in the end of their plot line to kill Slaanesh, he was feeling bitter and kind of had a heated comment.
So yeah, that's what I got from him.
He really believed that the Ynnari would have killed Slaanesh, and put in another major player somewhat like AOS, and the fact Slaanesh has been part of a branding image problem for GW made it easy for him to believe Slaanesh would actually die.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"I have heard there's one Khorne Daemon prince who was the last of his race since they all slaughtered each other.
Which got me thinking, since most Chaos Space Marines ARE still xenophobic, I think a major reason we haven't seen many Xenos chaos races is because of Chaos infighting causing all of the Chaos xenos races to kill each other.
It is Chaos after all.
I do hear the Eye of Terror has all sorts of Chaos xenos races all worshipping the wonderful power of Chaos though.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Could be converted from a Joker action-figure, of similar size to the Avatar of Khaine. It shouldn't be too difficult to make him look like a giant Troupe Master. I've seen this one
sold for cheap near me, so now I have a mission.
The Ynnari thing sputtered to nothing a while ago. This is just a confirmation of what we all knew.
I'm much more irritated about the wraithbone thing.
Now, let's be honest! The Guard, the Orks, and also the Necrons recently get some material thrown their way. They have good stories and decent model variety. The Guard's gotten some nice new tabletop material recently, and the Ork and Necron stories are like 90% of the good Xenos novels.
All the other Xenos and minor regular human groups do get the shaft though.

A thought came to me: Is Isha still confirmed to be trapped in the Garden of Nurgle? The Ynnari didn't have much to do with the burning of the Garden, and a lot of potential momentum was squandered. But what if the Eldar goddess of healing has managed to escape Nurgle's realm? There is still potential for a more unified Eldar faction, or just having them become more dynamic in general. The Harlequins are mustering like crazy, so Cegorach could take a more direct role in the war against Chaos. I do see a potential with adding Isha to the mix, along with a re-do of the Ynnari plan, to make the Eldar more prominent. I'm not really expecting anything remotely satisfying, but the Eldar as a faction are growing on me.
Speaking of Khaine, one thing Geedubs has done right is to stop making the Avatar of Bloody Handed Khaine a punching bag. It's very strong on the tabletop in recent editions and is pretty much what you'd expect from a giant burning metal avatar of a god of war and murder.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWow, so I beat the Eldar campaign in Winter Assault, and these guys are such backstabbing jerks. I’m amazed that I’m unironically going the Imperium did nothing wrong here because the Eldar straight up backstabbed them after the Guard came to their aid against the Orks.
General man even stated he knew the Eldar were not to be trusted but damn, the Eldar were assholes about this situation.
I’m genuinely going to enjoy hunting down Taldeer as part of the Blood Ravens. I unironically felt less awful playing as the Orks in this campaign.
The Eldar def aren’t for me, not really fond of how they play. Fuck the space elves, sorry thread.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"

Thought refresh meant the models got updated or got a new release?
