No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here

The Ciaphas Cain series is a more comedic take in general, but it also does a good job of showcasing just how deadly most of the Galaxy is to more or less ordinary humans like Cain. Even da Orks are shown to be the disgusting psychotic monsters they are when seen from any perspective besides their own.
The Necrons in particular never fail to terrify Cain. He only survived his first encounter with them thanks to the timely arrival of an Astartes squad.

Disgusted, but not surprisedToday's Horus Heresy Thursday
gives us a pair of Apothecaries
◊. I think I like the Mk.V Armoured one the best as I have always loved the studs on Heresy Armour.
Also, yesterday had a look at the Striking Scorpion
models over the years. I do like that they have gone back to the old concept sketches for the new Exarches
◊.

I have spent the last two days building terrain I bought and I still have Killzone Gallowdark to go.
That's not counting the Chaos Land Raider that somehow I actually found in stock somewhere, or the Lord Discordant I bought during the last edition and never actually got around to.
Or the Titanicus core set I'm splitting with a friend as part of a deal involving Legions Imperialis.
It is possible I have spent too much money over the last few weeks.
That looks promising. I haven't bought anything new recently, but I am working on my Pile of Shame. I bought Gorzag Gitstompa
a few years back, with the intent of converting him for fantasy. Finally got around to starting the conversion
◊ a week ago.
Merry Christmas. I bring tidings of Angels, Dark Angels to be exact
, with Belial
◊, Deathwing Companions
◊, a new Dark Angels upgrade sprue
◊, Deathwing Army Box
◊, and Codex: Dark Angels
◊. Everything looks good.
Between my wife and mother, I got hooked up for Christmas...they got me Orikan, Imotekh, the new Overlord, the Void Dragon, the Space Wolves Venerable Dread which I'm going to use to make Bjorn, and Magnus the Red. Now we just need to get the foundation work and new flooring done so I can put my painting stations back together...
The results for Miniature of the Year
came out yesterday and the winner is Lion el'Jonson
◊. While a very good model, I personally think both Anggron
◊ (#2) and Tahlia Vedra
◊ (from AoS) were better.
They've revealed the models for the Warhammer Store Anniversary
, a Fyreslayer for AOS and an Ethereal for 40K. I really like the Jidaigeki look of her, which is what I best like about the T'au.
Did the Ultramarine split up into 1000-strong chapters like the rest, or did they have that Guilliman privilege?
Continue writing our story of peace.Yes, they're split into chapters. In fact, the whole reason the Chapters system was implemented was because the original Ultramarines aka the XIII Legion had become way too large to properly manage as a unit. It had become over 100,000 strong when Roboute decided it was time to split it up.
The Chapters at the time of the Heresy were larger than what they would eventually become. The Ultramarines' Chapters at the time were about 20,000 strong each, with each Chapter split into companies of about 1000.
It was the Second Founding that made them split into Chapters of 1,000 strong.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSo do the successor chapters still reside in Ultramar, or are the blue boys expected to protect that sector all by themselves?
Continue writing our story of peace. The 500 worlds of Ultramar were either given up to the Ultramarines' many successor Chapters for governance or allowed to become autonomous. This is because the Heresy made Roboute very uneasy about Astartes' governing humanity.
And yes, the irony of Roboute's current situation compared to his past stance on this is not lost on the narrative or Roboute.
Everything Roboute did in the aftermath of the Heresy was done to limit the Astartes' influence and power over humanity. After all, the Astartes were created to defend humanity, not to rule over or replace itnote . And yet, Roboute's ended up becoming the de facto Emperor and wielding more power over the Imperium than any Astartes or Primarch ever has.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI've actually seen figures stating that it was at ~250,000 just before the Betrayal at Calth. And Lorgar's Word Bearers were somewhere at about the 200k range (which was why it had to be them. Monarchia just meant that it was personal). After Istvaan III and V, none of the other Traitor Legions (except maybe the Iron Warriors) could overcome their sheer numerical power, even with the advantage of surprise.
The splitting of Astartes into smaller Chapters also resulted in their role in the Imperium's military campaigns significantly. They became dedicated to smaller surgical strike operations, with the big campaigns and gruntwork being done by the Astra Militarum aka the Imperial Guard.
The funny thing is that the Imperial Guard is also a result of being split from a greater organization. The Imperial Guard isn't just the original Imperial Army with a different name. The Imperial Army was divided into the Guard and the Imperial Navy. This was done for the same reason as the Legions being split into Chapters — to ensure that no one force in the Imperium was powerful enough to instigate a full rebellion like the Heresy again.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI think the current lore is slightly different. According to the background section of the HH rulebook, the Excertis Imperialis (the organisation that included the Solar Auxilia and the Imperialis Auxilia/Imperial Army) was a separate organisation from the Armarda Imperialis/Imperial Fleet, but were subordinate to all other Imperial military forces and could be called upon at will. I am guessing the reorganisation made the Militarum/Guard independent rather than subordinate.

I think the regular one would be better as the new one is a special edition.
