No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here

Double-post: Heresy Thursday showcases a a new Traitor Consul
. I really like this model, for looking like a badass fighter and a harsh disciplinarian, like a space-Centurion in the space-Legions of Rome. He might also have my new favourite helmet among all Space Marines, because I dig the futuristic pickelhaube. I know the article describes him as a Traitor, but I see no problem with using him as a Loyalist, even in 40K.

I have some questions concerning Characters.Warhammer 40000 Tyranids. Right now, it's folderized and subdivided so that each bioform or bioform family (e.g., rippers, gaunts, lictors, carnifexes, tyrannofexes, etc.) has its own distinct section. Trouble is, the vast majority of these sections only have one, two, or three examples each, which a) strikes as very poor ground for making dedicated character sections, and b) looks bad, especially since a lot of these have an image for every creature in the classification and so end with a folder consisting primarily of empty space with a line of pictures down one side. A couple sections are just empty, for that matter.
I'm also skeptical in concept about treating every single troop type as a character group; it's one with organized and distinct groups like Astartes chapters, Craftworlds, or Leagues, with distinct subcultures like the Orks', or even with individual specialists and character choices like Techmarines or Oddboyz, but this really doesn't strike me as useful character groups to divide a page by and the extreme scarcity of examples per entry strikes me as supporting that.
I mean, look. At the end of the day we're a trope wiki first and foremost, right? So the way we organize pages should be intended to facilitate sorting and finding tropes. Creating twenty-seven sections averaging two entries each (technically 1.9, to be precise) doesn't strike me as doing that very well!
I'd get rid of the size classification folders and lump them all under "tyranid units" or "Followers". So no Small, Medium, Large, Flying, or Bio-Titans folders.
I'd also get rid of the Warrior Prime entry if no one bothers to put any actual tropes there. The other entries could also stand to have more tropes added.
Disgusted, but not surprisedYesterday on Warhammer Community
: This year's Warhammer Day miniature is The Ancestors’ Wrath
◊, a female Einhyr Champion with big hammer, shield and stag crest. I really like the model.

She is pretty cool. With a little bit of tweaking, that model and many others in the range could be converted to be taller and then used to kitbash some Marines.
The 40-year retrospective takes a look at another Votann model
and talks about the faction's return from obscurity. The Living Ancestor would need very little converting to become a Dwarf spellcaster in WHFB.
I don't really mind? They're treated as their own faction in most regards, and more importantly there's enough material on the new page to make interesting reading. I don't think I'd have split it off of my own initiative, but as it is I don't think that its presence is a problem.
(All the same, this is something that should have been discussed beforehand.)
I'd agree with leaving at least a cursory commentary on the main Tyranids page.
Heresy Thursday features this time an awesome Space Wolf Praetor
and some custom beakie-helmets for the Legion. I really like the ornate armour on this one. It wouldn't take too much effort to remove all obvious sci-fi bits, to make him merely an exaggerated fantasy knight. The heads also look pretty cool, especially the ones with markings that look like fangs on the helmet.
Double post for Warhammer Community stuff:
Yesterday there was the reveal of some jumping mech suits
◊ for Necromanda's Van Saar
(these look quite good but I would have preferred something anti-grav for the House with the most advanced tech) and designers' notes for the new Marines
.
Today we have a look at the new Sternguard and Terminator sets
(these are a good upgrade of the previous models) and a new style of carry case for skirmish games
(interesting style so will have to see how it works).
This time the 40-year retrospective takes a look at Vashtorr
and Chaos' general relation to machinery, such as Daemon Engines. The article mentions his designs for potential godhood, though I wonder what he would be Chaos God of? The corruption of the natural through rampant industry, maybe? That is pretty much what Hashut is in WHFB, while the Horned Rat is close to it in AOS, as he has technologically-minded servant. The current Chaos Gods are all corruptions of positive attributes, so Vashtorr would be the corruption of curiosity and problem-solving, i.e. science. It does get a bit close to Tzeentch being a corruption of scholarly pursuits, but the Science vs. Magic conflict would be quite cool.
Something that I was considering for the page for the first founding chapters, since so many of them have pics that should be made transparent, is doing with them like I did for the heretic Astartes page and putting the chapter symbols above the Marines, sorta like this:
The only issue is that finding regular Intercessor pics for all of them is likely gonna be really tough, even with mining pics from the Citadel paint app. I don't mind to use pics other than Intercessors, but I wanted to run this change by here to get thoughts on it.
It is Orktober again, so Youtube will be full with tabletop-crafters making videos on Ork-y conversions like this one:
I might have the time to make some myself this year. I've set aside some suitable toy-cars and other bits that can work well with Orks. I found an old construction loader I had as kid, almost as big as a Stompa. It's already damaged a bit, so it will look perfect as an Ork battle-wagon of some sort, once I put lots of guns and extra plating on it.
Double-post: Some nice new things for Necromunda, like an unregistered Psyker-for-hire
, some techno-organic squids, and custom bits for the Ash Wastes. I really like the Mind-locked Wyrd, and along with the custom Van Saar head I'm getting ideas for an Imperial Guardsman regiment. Possibly a band stuck for long on an inhospitable planet, where they are gradually going native, with even their sanctioned psyker becoming more like a tribal shaman for them.
Sandbox.Warhammer 40000 Astartes
For a while now, I've been working on a way to combine the pages for the Firstborn and Primaris Marines, both to consolidate their information and to update a lot of the pictures, and I think it's finally ready to pitch for comments.

Among the articles on new additions to Tyranids there is a closer look at the different types of Lictors
. A fun detail on the models for Lictors, Neurolictors, and on Death Leaper, is that the raised claws ought to be easily converted into wings. A flying Lictor could be really cool, while such a model gets plenty of use outside of 40K as well. I could use one as a Spawn of Cthulhu in Arkham Horror.
