No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here.

That is pretty much a new phenomena, the imperium have a "better exterminatus than sorry"
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"@SebastianGray: ...I mean, a. it is literally called 'The Fluff Bible', and b. it compiles information from the older issues of White Dwarf, most of which I do not have. If you consider White Dwarf a valid source (I certainly do), then it is canon, pulled from 2nd edition sources. The oldest issue I have is 230, which is well into 3rd edition.

Also, GW is not much of directly retconing stuff, they just pull the rug until they are call it again.
a good example are imperial knights
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I have been involved in the game since the month 2nd Edition was released (and own every White Dwarf published since then) can't remember hearing of it as an official publication. I consider White Dwarf to be a good source, around on a par with the novels. I tend to rank lore sources as: Current GW & Forge World Sourcebooks = Canon; Black Library & pre-8th Edition White Dwarf = Loose Canon (8th Edition White Dwarf seems to have a lot better intergration with the other departments than previous versions of the magazine so could probably be considered a GW sourcebook); Third Party Sourcebooks = Very Loose Canon; Computer Games = Non-Canon unless mentioned in one of the previous; C.S. Goto Book = Fan Fiction
As I said though, I am not adverse to the idea, just that I had never heard it outside 1st Edition lore

Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellI'd be cautious of treating 2nd Ed Fluff as current if nothing else explicitly affirms it. Some tropers weren't even born when that was written. As they say, all fluff is canon, not all fluff is necessarily true. The general depiction of Inquisitorial accountability is that everyone keeps tabs on each other. The Ordo Malleus are more likely to be suspicious of other Inquisitors because Radical Inquisitors are more likely to be sources of Daemonic activity than many other sources. So they tend to keep an extra eye on their comrades as a result.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Which is weird because it should be hereticus the one who does, is his job to oversight that nobody step over the line.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Yes, I have also heard it said from some people that essential canon is what you want it to be, the galaxy is a big enough place that anything can happen (including contradictory stuff due to Chaos). Anyway, it is almost midnight now and as I am getting up at 5 tomorrow morning (I don't have to, I just like to) I think I will go to bed now.

Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellI found a mention in the Daemon Hunter book from Dark Heresy, page 10, though you seem not interested in that source. It says the Ordo Malleus watches for corruption among the Inquisition; Inquisitor Lord Caidin is responsible for internal purges at the highest levels of the Inquisition, and is all but stated to be an Ordo Malleus Lord tasked with monitoring the Conclave with absolute authority. Seems pretty solid, in terms of internal affairs.
Also a mention of Proctors; I guess those are re-canonized again.
Yeah, I consider Fantasy Flight Games stuff to be very loose canon at best, but as I said in my previous post, my current view is that the 40K universe is a big place and there is room for most people's personal canon to be canon, official or not.
A little clarification on my stance on the term Fluff. As far as I am aware, the term was first coined by meta-gamers from other games who considered background material to be secondary at best if not irrelevant (fluff equalling insubstantial/inconsequential/etc.) compared to the rules (or crunch equalling substantial/proper/worthwhile). It has since been adopted by the gaming community as a whole without a lot of these connotations but I cannot help but consider it to be a little insulting as the lore is the part I am most interested in. As a general aside, the term shouldn't be used on trope and work pages as those pages should be understandable to people with no knowledge of the works in question and so fan/community terms and slang is generally discouraged as far as I am aware.
Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellFunny thing is, I by FAR prefer "fluff" over "lore" (which I find fucking cringe in most contexts), and the fluff is easily my favourite element of the modelling/gaming/fluff triad that makes up The Hobby. As a term, I consider it part and parcel of the Warhammer hobby's history and culture and wouldn't have it any other way.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Each to their own
Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellI use the two terms, in my case im a purely lore fan of warhammer: I dont care much of the tabletop game and I best maybe I want so mini but im not planing to game anyway soon.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Oh god I remember picking up the term Fluff back in the days of the Conclave forums.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Not all heroes wear capes.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.So the Alpha Legion ritual backfired all to shit, eh? Hehehehehehe...
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.New Year Open Day today (Warhammer Community Updates)

Sororitas: Retributors◊ (Awesome); Serephim◊ (nice); Archo-Flagellants◊ (very nice]]; Penitent Engines◊ (cool); Beutiful scenery◊
T'au Empire: New Shadowsun◊ (Good timing, I had been thinking of getting her this year)
Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellThe Sisters models are really well done. Shadowsun's interesting...I might pick her up someday as a "paint this for my (eventual) display case" collection.
...So my cosplay muse seems to have latched onto Farseer Idranel.
Uh. that's not good.
"Yup. That tasted purple."...And just after I started this Dark Angels army.
Feck.
"Yup. That tasted purple."I'm failing to comprehend the problem you're implying.
Why didn't the nice big box come with those nice big dice rather than plain white ones?
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
@Ninety
Ah, so it was a "Okay, this is cool, but they're getting out of control so we have to stop them." That's better.
