No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here

I want to play world eaters.
That is, a big creature that eats worlds.
The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.Somewhere out there I swear there has to be someone who plays Ultramarines with little Smurf action figures for a larf.
In my fantastical journey traversing the murky depths of the intercats, the closest I came to a picture of this were these guys
◊, but finding this veritable gem
◊ made it worth the trek.

'I'll show him a martyr! I'm going to do die SO HARD'I have seen a small World Eaters army last saturday. They practically obliterated an Ultramarine army using a mainly demon prince and a bloodthirster.
One of the high points of the game was the DP blowing up a land raider in close combat, killing two of its five passengers (a Black Reach Terminator squad).
PS: Great pictures. Both of them.

"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."@Bill's post lawlz.
I started with smurfs, in fact i can't think of anybody who hasn't started off with an astartes army. Ahh, the nostalgia is worth all the noobs.
I currently play tau, its the closest you will get to camping on a tabletop.

Never Trust A Mouse. This is partially because they've been in every starter kit ever. (That said, my first army was going to be Tau, but then my tendency to jump from obsession to obsession kicked in and I found myself with one badly-painted squad of Kroot and one Fire Warrior team, then a few Marines, then a Tyranid Broodlord that I never assembled because I still haven't figured out pinning, then a brief diversion back to Marines, then Orks...)
My one-time foray into a convention of any sorts saw me at Games Day 2007 which had the whole spectrum of Warhammer hobby in full force. I bought a mega-ticket months in advance which guaranteed me entry an hour early and an exclusive miniature
◊ for my patronage (still sitting unpainted in my drawer natch).
Anyway, I happened by a 'Guard player who had a table-spanning firing line of autocannons and Basilisks pounding the living crap out of his opponent. I talked with him briefly about his fail-safe rule of never having enough autocannons. Cheap sure, but when I walked by an hour later he was engaged in another game and it was doing its job just the same. He was facing Tau and it appeared to be a near-static battle of stationary guns going at it until one broke and tried to achieve the central objective. The way his army was configured it was obvious he had gone for maximum efficiency per point and was sticking to his one tried-and-true strategy. I have to wonder how much of a discrepancy there is in the win/loss ratio between "power gamers" and those who just collect the minis they think look cool and cobble together an army list out of their collection.
In any case, I got to meet the staff of the short-lived Canadian edition of White Dwarf, so that was pretty cool.

'I'll show him a martyr! I'm going to do die SO HARD'I just read Dark Apostle. I recommend it. If only to get to see a Chaos Space Marine weirded out by "something" that out-weirds him. (no, it's not Buffy Speak)

Space Marines? yes. Ultramarines? Not really. There was no starter set for 1st edition 40K, but the introductory scenario in the rulebook featured Crimson Fists, as did the box art for the Imperial Space marines box set. 2nd edition featured Blood Angels and 3rd featured Black Templars. Only the last tow box sets have featured Ultramarines, although their rise to prominence did start in 2nd edition, where they became the 'default' Chapter for Studio armies.
On the plus side I've got a minor ork army as well as the smurfs.

We need more Meltaguns...
Sometimes I even amaze myself. Currently: Nice and sneaky like
