@Sebastian I would argue that if the rules for an Expy prevent Stormcast from counting then the rules have been drawn so narrowly that I'm surprised there even are examples.

(A statement that wiki editors appear to back up given that, as far as I can tell, most of the actual entries on the Expy pages do not meet the requirement of being totally identical in virtually every respect.)

[up]Since posting here I also posted it in the clean-up thread and so far the only person to respond said that they think Expies only count if it is a single character, not for entire groups. I'll wait and see is anyone else has anything to say on the subject (I will admit not truly understanding the trope myself which is why I brought it up here and there).

The Blood Angel's helmet (head?) trophy is a nice touch. It's rather fitting too given that Abaddon wields the Talon of Horus which slew Sanguinius. It's especially amusing since Abaddon would have had to go out of his way to rip a Blood Angel's helmet (head?) off and stick it on one of his spikes.

The Stormcast are a weird version of either being expies or copies. They have the thick armor that's the pinnacle of strength for the forces of Order that were the ultimate project of a golden-armored creator, and they have a wide variety of different types of units that can equate to the various types of Astartes, and are taken from great warriors from a variety of nations and worlds and realms, but they're also different in a number of ways like their numbers being static (since they keep coming back), being more caring about mortals, and being more inspired by the Einherjar than monastic knights.

That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.

One of the biggest differences between the Astartes and the Stormcast Eternals is that the Stormcast Eternals actually have women in their ranks.

Personally, I think that was part of the reason why they were made. If you tried to put female Space Marines in 40k a significant contingent of the fanbase would flip their shit.

Double Post for the new Daemonkin rules preview.

If you are eagerly awaiting the pre-order of Warhammer 40,000: Shadowspear this weekend, we have a look at some of the rules for the new Daemonkin units in the battlebox, including a look at a few Warlord Traits and psychic powers from the new Malefic discipline. Let’s kick things off with some familiar faces…

Chaos Space Marines

Other than an incredible overhaul of the miniatures, these guys remain largely as you remember them. Chaos Space Marines are the reliable backbone of the Traitor Legions and Daemonkin alike – after all, the Daemonkin units are themselves Chaos Space Marines first and foremost, so can freely join their Detachments.

Oblitorators

These guys must have been working out hard in the Eye of Terror, as they’re now utterly monstrous in scale, standing almost as tall as a Helbrute! This new bulk comes with an extra Wound and an additional point of Toughness, and they can now be deployed on their own and in pairs instead of only in threes, giving them some additional tactical flexibility. That’s not even all, as their formidable fleshmetal guns are now Assault 6, and they are now armed with a nasty melee weapon in their crushing fists.

Greater Possessed

These champions of the Dark Gods have become one with a daemonic Herald, lending them a power that surpasses that of other Possessed. Not only does this warp-born strength lend them a profile that eclipses even that of a Chaos Lord, but they emanate an aura of unholy energy that empowers those born of the empyrean – a fantastic bonus for melee-focussed units such as Possessed and Daemon Engines.

Venomcrawler

One such Daemon Engine is the Venomcrawler – a hideous amalgam fresh from the corrupted forges of Nemendghast. This brand-new vehicle scuttles forward blasting apart its prey with a pair of deeply unpleasant excruciator cannons.

In addition to a ferocious hitting power in combat, Venomcrawlers offer a neat bonus to Daemonic Rituals in their proximity.

Master of Possession

Not only is a Master of Possession a capable Psyker, able to manifest two powers a turn, but they can wreak havoc in the enemy’s Psychic phase too.

In addition to having a 5+ invulnerable save from their daemonic patronage, these sorcerers can wield psychic powers from the Malefic discipline. Possession not only increases his hitting power but enables him to bind a daemon to his victims! A free Greater Possessed, anyone?

If you feel that your Venomcrawler (or if you really want to bring the pain, your Khorne Lord of Skulls) could use a handy boost, simply unleash Infernal Power.

As a Psyker, a Master of Possession can generate a Daemonkin Warlord Trait, further enhancing his psychic potential. For example, Warp Lord will help to up your average roll when making a Psychic test, all the while reducing the likelihood of suffering Perils of the Warp from a double 1.

By contrast, should you be looking to enhance your psychic defence, Devourer of Magic will give your Master of Possession a second attempt to deny enemy powers, as well as the opportunity to heal your Warlord in the process!

There’s certainly a lot to look forward to in the Shadowspear battlebox if you serve the Dark Gods (or are ready to throw in your lot with the Warmaster), but if your loyalty to the Emperor remains firm, we’ll be back tomorrow with some rules reveals for the Vanguard Space Marines. Whom do you serve? Let us know on the Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page.

Almost all the rules leaked if you know where to look. The Master of Possession's psychic discipline is easily the most interesting and creative one they've made in all of 8th edition.

I'll post this quickly before going to work: Vanguard Rules

Infiltrators

First up, let’s deal with the obvious point – as you would expect for a unit named for the art of infiltration, these guys aren’t limited to their deployment zone when it comes to setting up.

As Troops choices, Infiltrators in Battle-forged armies are great for contesting objectives in neutral or enemy territory early in the game due to their ability to trump non-Troops units for control. From their forward positions, they’ll make excellent use of the beta Bolter Discipline rules to unleash intense firepower with their marksman bolt carbines.

Once in place, Infiltrators will be hard to shift (especially if you set them up them in cover), as they can be healed or revived by the squad’s Helix Adept. They can also confound the aim of enemy units once per battle with smoke grenades.

Eliminators

These guys are your dedicated Primaris snipers but with their firepower dialled up to 11 thanks to the genius of Belisarius Cawl. Of of the greatest strength of Eliminators lies in the flexibility offered by the specialist ammunition they can fire from their bolt sniper rifles, though they also share the Concealed Position ability of the Infiltrators and wear camo cloaks to help make the most of cover.

Suppressors

If you crossed Inceptors with Devastators, you’d probably end up with something like Suppressors. They can use their jump packs to leap forward and claim the best firing positions or, even better, use grav chutes to drop right on top of them! Once in position, they can rain heavy firepower onto their targets with their accelerator autocannons. In addition to an extra point of AP over standard autocannons, they enable the Suppressors to lay down withering suppressive fire (it’s kinda their thing – hence the name!) that leaves their victims wide open to a follow-up assault from Reivers or other melee specialists – here’s looking at you, Wulfen!

Lieutenant in Phobos Armour

In addition to the Tactical Precision ability shared by all Space Marine Lieutenants, Phobos-armoured Vanguard Lieutenants can deploy via grav-chute and gun down their foes with a master-crafted occulus bolt carbine. They’re the perfect addition to any army looking to make use of stealth or massed drop assaults.

Captain in Phobos Armour

As a Vanguard commander, a Captain in Phobos armour exemplifies the qualities of his warriors. Not only can he be set up in a concealed position, but he wears a camo cloak and is also equipped with an omni-scrambler on his backpack – a handy piece of wargear that is also shared by the Infiltrators. If you’re looking to create a forward firebase of these stealthy troopers, never leave home without one of these guys to lead them.

Librarian in Phobos Armour

Vanguard Librarians are clad in camo cloaks for a hefty boost to their saving throws while in cover. In addition to their psychic hoods and ability to deploy in concealed positions, Librarians in Phobos Armour are highly trained in the psychic art of Obscuration. These powers unlock a whole new range of tactical opportunities, such as Scryer’s Gaze, which has devastating potential when combined with the marksman bolt carbines of the Infiltrators.

Shrouding has the ability to throw your opponent’s battleplans right out the window by denying them the freedom to shoot at their target of choice.

The clandestine skills of Vanguard Warlords can be further enhanced with the addition of a bespoke set of Warlord Traits. One nasty combination is to give your Vanguard Captain or Lieutenant the Target Priority trait, stacking the bonus to a friendly unit’s hit rolls with your Warlord’s aura ability to re-roll 1s to hit or wound.

If you thought that confounding opponents during set-up was exclusively the domain of the Genestealer Cults, think again – check out the Princeps of Deceit Warlord Trait.

If you’re as excited as we are to get your hands on some Vanguard goodies, you won’t have long to wait – Warhammer 40,000: Shadowspear is up for pre-order this Saturday! What’s more, all of these new units can join armies hailing from any of the First Founding or successor Chapters, so you’ll soon be able to add these powerful new weapons to your arsenal.

Tomorrow, we’ll be discussing how you can expand the contents of your Shadowspear battlebox into full-on matched play armies, so be sure to check back then. In the meantime, now that you’ve had a glimpse of the rules for all the units in the set, let us know which units you’re most looking forward to adding to your army on the Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page.

Examples on how to expand the Shadowspear stuff for Matched Play

Picture the situation – you’ve finished assembling and painting all of the miniatures in your Warhammer 40,000: Shadowspear set and fought through the campaign’s exciting missions a bunch of times. You’re now looking to expand your budding collections into full-on matched play armies, but where do you go from here? Well, we’ve got some ideas and have made up a few lists with the models in the set used as a starting point…

Daemonkin

This army, approximately 2000 points in size when kitted out, runs with the Daemonkin theme throughout its composition. However, this isn’t purely for narrative reasons – almost all of the units in the army will benefit from bonuses like the Locus of Power aura ability of the Greater Possessed. The two Greater Possessed can be set up as separate units, meaning that you will be able to spread the effect across most of the battlefield.

The Master of Possession has some powerful psychic abilities that can really boost the effectiveness of your force, and his Warlord Trait (enabling him to re-roll casting rolls of 1) will help to increase the odds of him manifesting them. Should you manage to pull off both powers in the same turn, then alongside the aura ability of the Greater Possessed, you’ll be adding 1 to the Strength and invulnerable saves of nearby Possessed, Daemon Engines and Obliterators, while enabling them to re-roll hit and wound rolls of 1! If you’re able to position them correctly, imagine that effect applied to your two big Possessed units as they crash into the enemy lines…

Your 10-man squads of Chaos Space Marines are great for holding objectives and offering fire support while the rest of your fast-moving, melee-focussed army speeds towards the foe to engage them in combat. Alternatively, you can use them to follow up your first wave of daemonically possessed gribblies and put the new beta Bolter Discipline rules to good use at close range.

Vanguard Space Marines

This army is within the region of 2000 points with wargear and is designed to threaten objectives and enemy units anywhere on the battlefield. By setting up all the units in the Vanguard Detachment in low orbit, you’ll be able to see five of your opponent’s units deploy before you need to commit any of your own. Your Infiltrators, Scouts, Captain and Librarian are all able to set up in concealed positions, enabling you to secure any advantageous forward positions right from the get-go.

The army offers a large number of snipers(Ultramarines players may want to include Sergeant Telion for his awesome sniping skills too!) in the Scout Squads, Eliminators and even the Captain in Phobos Armour, whose master-crafted occulus bolt carbine will be augmented to Damage 3 thanks to his Warlord Trait. All this sniper fire will enable you to pick off enemy Characters with relative ease, robbing your opponent of their own aura abilities and psychic powers. Your Librarian will be able to further augment their firepower – or that of your Infiltrators – with Scryer’s Gaze and can add his own Character-hunting efforts with Mind Raid (and if you equal or beat their Leadership characteristic on 3D6, you’ll even bag yourself a Command Point).

Once the battle is underway, you can unleash your Vanguard Detachment in force, dropping down 34 models (totalling more than 70 Wounds between them) right where your opponent is most vulnerable and immediately dominate that area of the battlefield. Tank-hunting duties will fall to your Land Speeders, but when armed with multi-meltas and typhoon missile launchers, they will be more than up to the task.

Shadowspear is on pre-order in the UK now. Unfortunately it is a bit expensive for me to get at the moment so I will have to see about getting it at a future date. Although, as it is the background and rules I am most interested rather than the models (although they are awesome models) in I may look on eBay in a few weeks to see if anyone is selling just the books.

I've updated the description for the main Space Wolf characters and was wondering what to do about the Wolf Lords on the Character page that haven't had rules, models or much focus in the background material (Bran Redmaw, Erik Morkai, etc.). I have been thinking of adding a section for Wolf Lords in general to the Space Wolves section of the Chapters page for the unique tropes that they have and wondered if putting the few tropes from those characters there would be appropriate?
