No 40K thread yet? I'm surprised. Nay, shocked, shocked I say to discover there's gambling going on in this establishment...
I'm eagerly anticipating the imminent 5th Edition release, personally, but I was interested to know if anyone here plays and has a differing opinion on it. There are certainly plenty of people out there who seem to think that 40K 4th edition "only just" came out and that a new edition isn't needed. Anyone?
Warhammer Fantasy (including Age of Sigmar and WFRP) has its own thread here

You'd think that but waaay back when I played that game the first time I was called upon to make saves for the Terminators resulted in five 1s...
Possibly the worst roll I've ever made.
But yeah the Terminators are pretty brutal in that battle, of course they tend to be pretty unpleasant most of the time, Land Raider mounted, Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield Termies say hi!
I'd introduce house rules on that. If its clawing through your brain, your shields don't work.
The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.Hey I play the Tau army in 40K and well...thought about expanding to a second army due to a combination of REALLY being into the hobby (and having the money to afford it) and not like being mocked by "Serious" Warhammer fans.
I'd like to start collecting Nid's or DA ORKS!!!! and was wondering...how the armies differ from each other playstyle wise. Both are swarm tactic armies that love to get into melee combat (I've played alot against Ork players, not so much the Tyranids) and also where to start off with either army.
I played a demo game once; Space Marines vs Tyranids, I was the Space Marines (painted as Black Templars, I think). I had two squads, and I think the rep had genestealers and 'gaunts.
- So, I start with one squad on a building and another on the ground in front of it, they wipe out the 'gaunts when the genestealers come charging in. Can't fire into melee, so I take the silly but probably in character action of jumping off the roof and into melee with genestealers. I somehow managed to win.
^^I play tyranids, but I don't know a whole lot about Orks.
When it comes to the 'nids the new codex is all about synergy between your units, getting them to support each other as your get across the board and eat things. There are also some hilariously brutal special characters you can use.
Your basic 'nid army would be a couple of big squads of gaunts to use as a meat shield, a brood or two of outflanking genestealers, some anti-armour in the form of Zoanthropes or Hive Guard, but the army is pretty flexible so you can swap it around as you want.
The best initial purchase would probably be the Battleforce as ever, gets you a decent amount of gaunts and genestealers as well as 3 warriors, if you convert one of those into a 'Tyranid Prime' you can make a fairly useable beginners army.
Oh yeah list of things that are good: Trygons, Tervigons, Hive Guard, Zoanthropes, Genestealers, Warriors+Tyranid Prime, Toxic Hormagaunts, Gaunts with Devourers
Useable things: Hive Tyrant, Venomthropes, Mawlocs
Mostly Useless things: Pyrovores, Lictors

I think the general rule with Genestealers is "Shoot them first."
The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.Yup shooting at Genestealers is good, they don't get a great armour save and their Toughness is mediocre.
But then you get the outflanking ones coming in from a short table edge, or the Ymgarl Stealers coming out of area terrain and you realise you haven't positioned your units quite far enough away and then suddenly it's 'oh god get it off my face arrgahwarbleargh' etc.
It's very amusing.
Would I be able to mitigate Marine hatred if I play the Angry Marines?
Well the angry marines should...
Because they're angry about not having them, and they might just send a strongly worded letter of how they are distinctly upset with the current stat of affairs....
And that they're running out of things to kill... which shouldnt happen in a universe so GRIMDARK

TALOSTALOSTALOSTALOSTALOSTALOSAnyone see the daily blog update on the GW website? The store in Hannover Germany 500+ tank battle, check it out
.

In the tutorials where I go, the Dreadnought starts already broken, as an objective. But to counterbalance it, there are no deffkoptas in the game.
Also, the staff member usually tips the odds a bit in favor of the player, by including the warboss if he chooses the Orks and not otherwise.
That said, I think the terminators are more dangerous against the 5 nobz than against the 20 boyz, with their One-Hit Kill that suppresses one of the nobz' advantages.
