Earth - "A Bureaucratic Desire for Revenge, part 2"

A lot of drone metal sounds really samey to me, but I'm liking these guys quite a bit so far. They remind me a lot of a slower-paced Pelican, actually, although Pelican isn't exactly pure sludge or drone, especially not in later albums. And apparently Earth's later stuff shows experimentation with folk/country type stuff, so I'm looking forward to that.

Flobots - Stand Up

Anything with the word "drone" in the title in title is a no-go for me.

Why? Because it makes me think that the act of listening to it is going to cause robots to come to me and do robot things, and the knowledge that this isn't going to happen is too much to bear.

Earth - "Ouroboros Is Broken"

Wikipedia sez:

Earth's music is mostly instrumental, and can be divided into two distinct stages. Their early work grew out of the Seattle-area grunge scene and is recognized as pioneering the genre of drone doom — an experimental offshoot of doom metal, characterized by droning, minimalist, lengthy, and repetitive structures. Earth's early albums were usually recorded as a duo (Carlson and a bass guitarist), and could be seen as a variation of the experimental doom-influenced metal of The Melvins. Following a hiatus due to Carlson's personal problems, Earth reappeared with a markedly different sound. Their music was still slow-paced and lengthy, but now with a drummer and featuring strong elements of country music and jazz.

Eric B. & Rakim - I Know You Got Soul

It's true. I simply can't listen to drone music because of it.

In all seriousness, I've never listened to drone music in my life.

^^^I've got pretty much all their stuff, and I'm gonna listen to it all in order.

Also, they were apparently one of the major pioneers of drone doom.

To be honest, it's the later stuff, with country and jazz influences, that I'm looking forward to hearing most. Although this earlier stuff I'm listening to now is pretty good.

Earth - Seven Angels

Yeah, Earth 2 is their first full-length, pretty much straight drone all the way. Never heard their later ones.

Yeah, Stars of the Lid is very "zzzzzzzzzzzzz", although I am of the opinion that it's a good thing in their case. Actually, there's probably some interesting parallels you could draw between pure ambient music like that and doom drone like Earth, Sunn O))), Boris, etc.

They're both very very slow-paced, little to no percussion... I wonder what it is that makes me usually prefer ambient music to doom drone?

BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Oh, try listening to Pelican, Wicked. They're very good. They're not really drone or anything, but their sound is pretty clearly inspired at least in part by bands like Earth.

Earth - "Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine"

I'm also not sure what makes these guys appeal to me more than any other doom drone band I've ever listened to before. A lot of it seems VERY samey to me somehow... but I am enjoying this band.

Mmmm, nice and relaxing. BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...
