You have to admit that as far as character development goes, she's the little Rei clone that could.

Wait, Yuki is Revolver Ocelot?

Also, the author notes at the end of one book said that Yuki was based on the president of the LITERATURE BRIGADE.

Also, did anyone else get the impression that after the ENOZ concert, she started to suspect the existence of her powers? 'Cause the expression on her face when they thanked her made me think she was thinking something along the lines of, "It was a coincidence. Why am I feeling so guilty? It was a passing thought: 'Hey, playing in a rock band sounds really cool!'

Never really saw it like that actually, interesting interpretation. I saw it more as her just really not knowing how to take genuine praise and sincere gratitude from anyone. She's used to people staring at her from a distance and muttering something about how crazy/stupid/out of control she is.

The animated version of Lone Island Syndrome implies that she'd never want to actually see anyone get hurt, even if she wants something mysterious to happen. That's why she's the second most shaken-up about it, after Mikuru of course, who reacted pretty much as expected.

@The Adversary: She's the Rei clone that makes us go d'aaw!

I thought I was alone in this.

I found Haruhi a lot like a spoiled child: she didn't ever really appreciate the feelings of others, in that she never really had a chance be taught about understanding feelings and all the Mister Rogers stuff that make people socialize properly. I still think she was out of line with her harassment of Mikuru (despite my annoyance with said character), but with her character's defining trait being so enthusiastic that she forgets to consider little things like physical limitations and social norms, I can accept that.

A friend of mine put it thusly: Haruhi is the extension of the fangirl dream: having an entire wild and crazy world like you always read about, willing to do everything and anything fun and crazy. This is an itneresting and disturbingly apt observation.

Please keep in mind: I only saw the anime series and I have no knowledge of the Light novels aside from this wiki. My information is VERY biased

@Grahf: Well, yeah, that too, but whenever Haruhi gets what she wants in other instances (and you have to admit, singing in front of a crowd that's cheering you on is a common enough fantasy that it'd be stranger if she didn't want it), people get hurt. So when I heard that she'd replaced a band member who was indisposed (by the way, anyone else catch the brief Back To The Future shout-outiness of the broken fingers? If there isn't a fanfic in that, I'll eat my hair), I assumed she'd subconsciously willed the girl into an accident.

^^

It's also why she annoys the hell out of some people. And it's not a small amount either. The two most commonly cited examples are;

1) When she gets Mikuru drunk during the making of the film. Which is the event that gets cited as the pinnacle of her sociopathic assholerly.

or

2) When she nearly obliterates the world because she's losing a baseball game and Kyon called her on abusing Mikuru to let off steam. This one is a bit less, because it's one of those things she wasn't aware of, and it also seemed that she was angry that Kyon was letting her down in his position.

She does warm up a little. And while there's not huge piles of evidence, there is more than enough. Just, a significant amount of it hasn't been animated yet, which nullifies it until it is animated for people like Excel and THX (at least if I'm remembering some of their arguments correctly, although I think it was more Excel's thing than THX's).

It was Excel's. The defining point is the treasure hunt in Tsuruya's backyard where both boys got valentine's day chocolate from the three girls.

Which makes the relevant scene in Haruhi-chan where they bake in Yuki's apartment either a Shout-Out, an Early-Bird Cameo, a Mythology Gag, or a combination of all three.

Looking at the story in the novel, it's rather ambiguous. Haruhi mentions that she came upon the scene after the accident happened. But of course there's no mention of what happened before, like if she saw them or not.

Also, I can't really recall any other incidents where people got physically hurt by Haruhi's meddlings. Now, financially hurt, emotionally hurt (where to even begin that list...), getting their pride stomped on, etc, etc. But not broken bones or things like that.

@Mapi: I'm tempted to say that the Haruhi-chan situation was a shout-out. Given that the boys did get their chocolates, but Haruhi didn't want to seem soft, so she said she wanted them to earn them. Cue host outfits. Cue "You Made Mikuru Cry!"

Also, has this pretty much officially become the new Haruhi thread? Or is it going to return to the huge one sooner or later? Just curious.

Some quotes from another thread that adequately sum up how I feel about Haruhi:

THX 1138 said:

Haruhi. Haruhi, Haruhi, Haruhi. She is a toxic, caustic, self-centered, cruel, petty, abusive, abrasive, childish, intolerable bully. She is not heroic, laudable, likable, compelling, or entertaining in any way, shape or form. I hate Haruhi so much that I derive little morsels of joy from fantasizing alternately about Kyon and Mikuru running off behind her back and having desperate, passionate, clumsy sex in the school's supply closets half because they're horny teenagers and half because they're deliberately spiting her and Kyon walking in on a session of Haruhi's chronic, bi-curious abuse of Mikuru, only instead of letting her slam the door in his face, Kyon gives Haruhi a just and glorious punch in the face that would make Kamina and Simon smile with approval.

And before anyone says: No. I don't care that "she gets better in the later books", unadapted material cannot, and should not ever apologize for the incredibly sour first impression the anime made on many (myself included).

I hate Haruhi. I have never hated any fictional character, as much as I hate Haruhi. If Haruhi was real, I would hunt her down and stick fish hooks in her eyes. The more I'm told to like her, the more my hatred grows. I would love to give my reasons, but I'm sick of them being analysed, and people "Explaining why I'm wrong". You won't change my mind. Did I mention the HAAAATE?!?

They said it better than I ever could.

Does anyone else just... not understand how someone can have so much rage about a fictional character?

Hell, I've never felt so vindictive about anyone in the real world, and I'm including genuine Complete Monsters there.

Same reason why I hate Twilight so much. They don't like Haruhi and can't stand her popularity, retroactively amplifying their hate to extreme levels.

Personally, I like the series but I don't like Haruhi herself. She's immature, loud, and cheerfully obnoxious. Forcing everyone into her craziness without regard for their feelings or even good sense. Precisely the type of person I'd hate in real life.

A friend of mine put it thusly: Haruhi is the extension of the fangirl dream: having an entire wild and crazy world like you always read about, willing to do everything and anything fun and crazy. This is an itneresting and disturbingly apt observation.

Exactly, she's a fangirl living in her own Mary Sue Self-Insert Fic.

I think Haruhi is fairly interesting in precisley how *normal* she is.

She's just a normal being with access to godhood, who does not know it. I think if she *did* know she'd actually be (slightly) less of a jerkass about it.

Hmmm, you can probably make a great Freudian analysis out of this.

Hell... Shit. Now I had an idea.

What if Kyuon, the SOS dan and the entire "keep Haruhi ignorant" thing is just a defence mechanism of Haruhi's? So long as she is consciously unaware of her power she doesen't have to take responsibility for it. So she creates a bunch of people to keep her ignorant (along with their other functions...) as a self-censoring mechanism.

How so? She isn't a character that the creator loves but everyone else hates. But a character that you hate but most of Tv Tropes loves.

I'm getting kind of sick of everyone gushing over Nagato and Tsuruya. I like them too, but seriously. Give it a rest.

Wouldn't say I was traumatized, though. Just kinda irritated.
