What happened? Feel the need to...vent about it? As usual, I am completely sincere even though I couldn't resist the pun.

I really like my current set-up of avatar, title, and signature. Just felt like sharing that.

Okay. One of my characters is named Sabin, just Sabin, only one name because that's how his culture does it. In practice, his name would be Sabin Sabin, but you'd never call him that. Instead, you call him Mr. Sabin (Dr. Sabin, actually) or just Sabin. Changing your name means you've either married a foreigner or nobility (nobility have two names) or are rebelling against the family. However, immigrants from his background who want to fit in more sometimes "string out" their names, so if Sabin had wanted to be a conformist, his name would be Sabin Sabin and you'd call him Sabin Sabin.

Now, he has a daughter. Her name is Sabine. Traditionally, she'd be named Ilsa or Propolis after her mother becsuse she's female, or, if they were going with her mother's culture, Ilsa Sabin. But... yeah and yeah. Sabin hates Ilsa, so he wants Sabine to be 100% him.

Is this incredibly confusing, y/y?

It's some pretty crappy worldbuilding, though. I mean, why would people only give their kids one name?

Nah, it's not bad. And a lot of cultures only had one name.

Oh, one circumstance where you might change your kid's name is if you had multiple children. Otherwise it's deeply unlucky. (this has led to a lot of boys named after their mothers and girls named after their fathers)

Note that common names in China can come out as something like "first son, second son, first daughter," etc. No, really.

He sort of swings back and forth between "Sabine is the beautiful apple of my eye and my only company and my only heir" and "Sabine is a foul little teratoma who ruined my life after causing me nine months of agony"

So we should have just taken MPreg as read, huh? Anyway, I can see characters in this setting adding place names like da Vinci or O'Malley or something.
