Hmmm. I agree that it's not for everyone. Heh, I wrote an entire essay about that.
I thought about that a lot today, and I guess the underlying problem I see is something about human thinking... The assumption that one quality indicates that the presence of another quality is impossible, even though the two aren't direct opposites. On an extreme level, you could say that racism is a form of that, like, "somebody with black skin can't be expected to be a good person" even though obviously the two aren't even related. But there's other things, too, like how the opposite of "idealist" is not "pragmatist", so just because someone's an idealist doesn't mean they'll throw common sense out of the window, you know?
I'm a little worried that acting "moe" as I apparently do, and as I like to do, would make people put less stock into my intelligence, or that my dreaminess and emotionality will make people assume I can't be trusted to do a necessary evil or something... Or even worse, what if people stop taking my works seriously just because I express some strongly romantic and idealistic sentiments in them? I don't want to see the day people go around "justifying" that by saying "Hey, it's just that one character who said that, he's just ka-RAZY like that!", or "Just turn off your mind and enjoy it, har har har!"
... man, I kinda started ranting out of nowhere. Argh! To work with me!
Eh. I cycle back and forth on the whole emotional thing. Online I tend to try and hedge it in a bit, but sometimes it leaks out, y'know? I let it flow over time, 'til people get used to it.
I don't see anything wrong with it, but sometimes it confuses people when science and emotions hit at the same time. Also, anger is bad for me, even when it's "righteous."
See you later, Faw.
And so I was reborn... and no-one noticed anything had changed.

Which is to say, I sympathize with what you're saying (if I'm reading you correctly). Something doesn't have to have a serious tone to be sincere, after all.
edit: Got distracted before hitting send, and therefore ninja'd. So I just want to say that, conversely, I hope you don't think I don't take you seriously because I enjoy your moe-ness. :p

Productivity is for people without internet connections. -Count DorkuI agree in that parodies can make excellent straight examples. Ouran High School Host Club is the best shoujo manga ever.
Don't despair, Faw! I agree with you wholeheartedly! :D
One of my professors said something like (and I'm paraphrasing here): "I'm an idealist because I believe in working for good things, not sitting by and letting them stay crappy." So there you go and all that.
I agree with you as well, Faw! I think "Pollyanna" is great, and I've never even played Earthbound. And it's very rare that I'll call anything Narm or a Guilty Pleasure. I can't see the point in feeling guilty over something fun.
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI like Pollyanna and I hardly got anywhere in Earthbound. And Ouran is great. But I can't take hard-to-spell seriously. It's like too many sexist action flicks, and the Male Gaze doesn't help me think otherwise.

Moose cavalry. Discuss.

Also, I like the song Polyanna all by itself, though I enjoyed Earthbound thoroughly ^.^

And so I was reborn... and no-one noticed anything had changed."Pollyanna" (the version with lyrics) is actually from the original Mother on NES. The More You Know!
(It is something of a Bootstrapped Theme for the series, though.)
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaIf anything, I think being intentionally over the top makes it easier for something to avoid being narmful. I think the richest sources of narm are things that take themselves completely seriously despite being totally ridiculous.
The man was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the best at both killing and not killing - StrangerHave I mentioned that I don't like the music? Electric guitars are way overplayed in everything nowadays, and the raw raw fight the powah rap is kinda dull.
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.The Freudian symbolism is the only thing I really have a problem with. Not only does it make the whole thing really, really awkward, but it also can make the show kind of predictable. I mean, when a sky-battleship that looks like it has a lot of manhood encounters a rather yonnic Airborne Aircraft Carrier, you just know how the whole thing's going to end.
Yeah, pretty much.
Yonic is a funny word.

The Airborne Aircraft Carrier gets pregnant?

Dang, now I want to see a self-reproducing ship. No, wait, Berserker probes are lame, scratch that.

[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Airbone, you say?
Actually, the "carrier babies" thing would have been really funny. Unfortunately, the only thing that really happened is that the carrier blew up and hit the ground in a manner visually reminiscent of the end of a round of single-player.

Sounds like misogyny to me!
No, not really. I haven't seen the episode, anyway.
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI do take Faw seriously. Heck, if someone couldn't take his feelings seriously, they probably couldn't do the same for mine!
Some writing.

It might also, in part, be the company I kept when I first saw Gurren Lagann. We could both love it for its personal charm and "you can do it, I believe in you" attitude, and for its over-the-top action.
And blatant symbolism. :p
But again, it's not for everyone.
