Well, there may be another scene in Cambot's memory, but it would probably make more sense for the memories to end here. Seeing your creator nominate for sacrifice the person you were programmed to love would certainly be crisis-inducing for the robot.

Well then. "She died and we did nothing" now has a slightly different meaning than we thought.

So it's not just that the robots did nothing... the people of the court did something. She didn't just die, she was killed.

...Dammit, another mystery. X-X

Dun dun dunnnnnnnnnnnnnn! So if the "we did nothing" is referring to the robots, who set up the arena and shrine? It might be that Diego did it sometime later in remorse, but since her death was his idea it makes no sense for him to be included in "She died and we did nothing".

I think Diego forgot that his 'bots were programmed to love her. He somehow betrayed them when he fell to the Green-Eyed Monster...

Her death may not be his idea. I got the impression that he was pointing out what everyone already realized.

I had the same idea as Desertopia. I think that everyone had realized this and Diego was just stating the facts.

Diego was described as the architect of the scheme last page though. So presumably its his idea.

Nor precisely. He could be the one who elaborated the plan, but probably the main concept came from Sir Young.

The architect of a plan would be the one who figured out how to make it work, not necessarily the one who came up with the original bare-bones idea. What I wonder is whether he had perhaps had a Plan B he could put in place if Jeanne had accepted him — one that used some other "sacrifice".

I don't get it. Why is fortifying the Court so important that Jeanne has to die?

Coyote already acted once to stop the conflict, so why wouldn't they follow the assumption that he would act again if the forest dwellers attacked the Court? I can understand their need to protect themselves, but sacrificing someone without even facing a direct threat by the Forest seems way too extreme. Especially when there's an omnipotent trickster hanging around who hasn't picked a side yet.

We don't really know who these people are, but they're supposed to be refugees from some conflict seeking to build a home for knowledge and all that. They seem to have some wise people with them, to have founded and built the Court. Something's wrong if they're acting so aggressive.

It may be her or all of them.

Also, unless I'm completely misremembering the continuity, Coyote hadn't shown up yet.

We also don't know that the sacrifice is necessarily her death. We know Diego said she must be the sacrifice, and we know she died, but we don't know that the two are the same thing.

Coyote has shown up.

The timeline, as far as I know:

  • The original generation (including Diego, Sir Young, and Steadman, among others) came to Gillitie Wood. Where they came from and why is a mystery, but they made a treaty to coexist with the creatures of the Wood.
  • Ideological conflict arose between the Court and the Wood, and began driving the two sides apart.
  • Coyote, Renard, and Ysengrin arrived. Coyote responded to the "terrible squabble" by creating the Annan Gorge to divide the Court and the Wood.
  • Cambot's memories were recorded during the aftermath of the creation of the Gorge: trees remained on the Court's side, and buildings remained on the Wood's side, and both sides are in the process of pulling them down. Plans are being made by the Court to fortify the Annan.
  • Some time after this fortification is carried out, the Court and the Wood came to another agreement. A bridge was built over the gorge, and arrangements were made so those who wished to switch sides could get new bodies and do so.

The first four all occurred in one generation; the last may have as well, but it's unknown.

Coyote has already arrived and marked his territory, pun intended. Ysengrin and Reynardine might not be there yet, since Rey professes to know nothing about Jeanne, Diego, etc.

Coyote said that the three of them went together, but we know he has a bad sense of time due to his long lifespan, so 'together' might just mean within the same century.

The point is, Coyote is definitely there, or else he could return soon. He doesn't want everyone to fight, and there isn't anyone at his level to challenge him. The Court and Forest don't seem to be at war in the wake of the ravine being formed. So why are the Courtsmen so desperate to seal the border, especially at this cost?

The only explanation I can think of is that they're not doing it because they fear an attack.

They're doing it to prevent the seed bismuth's power from leeching across the border, so they can have it to themselves. This is pure Epileptic Trees because we don't know anything about what the seed bismuth is, but that's my guess.

Surely, given that Coyote is currently Lord of the Forest, he's pretty definitively picked a side, though?

Coyote has shown up.

I should not have forgotten that so fast.

I was going by the fact that Reynardine didn't recognize the founders, and Coyote seemed to state that he and Reynardine (and Ysengrin I think) showed up at the same time.

In any case, Coyote certainly doesn't seem to have put an end to the conflict.

^ The sign of a good storyteller.

Diego is reinforcing Young's idea, it seems. Perhaps he didn't want the guilt, and decided to blame Young for everything?
