Actually, reference wouldn't be that hard to come by- just hold a webcam at the right angle in the appropriate pose (although, weirdly, you can hit a Reality Is Unrealistic situation doing that- there are some poses that simply do not look real).
Well done, though. And whoever 'he' is, Diego considers him a traitor. Given how little we know about the beginnings of the Court, it's kind of tough to guess.
Yeah, and I'm pretty sure that "he" can't be Sir Young, either. He's the Protector of the Court, so he couldn't be a traitor, right? Not even in Diego's mind.
More likely, it's someone we've never heard of. Tom's fond of doing that. Remember Brinnie?
We're not just men of science, we're men of TROPE!Sure, Tom could go for a Jeanne still loves the traitor, and Sir Young kills the traitor, which makes Jeanne commit suicide or just become really depressed, which spurs Diego's hatred for him, but I'll stick with the less-complicated theory for now.
Also of note: Jeanne was not one of the founders of the court (as far as Jones knows), but Young and Diego were.

I wrote about a fish turning into the moon.Regarding Ysengrin: He and Reynardine were acquaintances before Coyote came to the British Isles.
The treaty between the Court and the Wood was already in place when the three magic dogs arrived at Gillitie.
Diego's not really much of a catch, either. Dude knows his robots but has a very poor grasp of how other humans think. "What? You're sad about the Court cutting down trees, and being separated both from nature and from someone you love? You don't care much for technological amenities? Surely if I make a hundred robots for you, you'll forget all about your old boyfriend and love me instead!"

OK, regarding my confusion about Ysengrin's age, when he first shows up in "The Fangs of Summertime", the Headmaster says: "Is that you, General? What the devil have you done to yourself?" I took that to mean that Ysengrin used to be of the Court and then left and got a new body.
For the record, I know that Ysengrin is named after the wolf in the French Renard fables. That doesn't necessarily indicate his identity in a comic like this. After all, the name "Eglamore" is also from an old ballad, and he is... I don't know how to end this sentence.
Ysengrin is a supernatural entity that arrived in the Wood along with Reynardine and Coyote someways back. His origin lies neither with the Court nor with Gilitie. Same with Renard and Coyote. Renard and Ysengrin come from Europe somewheres, and Coyote comes from the Americas.
Also, these guys all come from this
I think.

Back for no reason whatsoever!Yeah, you're right. It's clear later, in that chapter, that the headmaster is referring to Ysengrin's new body, which Coyote gave him. Here in fact
. But it was never implied that he'd switched sides, Rey says his previous body was a wolf, not a human, here
. Though I guess it's easy to conflate the two things given the previous examples (Aly and the Fairies).
Anyway in the second Coyote chapter we get Ysengrin's origin, of course, and that he hates humans. So, General seems to be his forest title rather than anything else.

So, in this page
from a while back in Coyote's story, we see in the second panel primitive representations of the first humans in the Court.
I'm sure it's been analyzed already in the past, but is there any consensus on who any of the humans are? Now that we're getting a flashback we should keep our eyes open. One of them is a hunched over man with a pointed chin, and it could be Diego. Another is big enough to be Sir Young. None resemble Jeanne except maybe the one in the top right.
And another tidbit I found from rereading: this page
. There were humans who stayed on the Gillitie side after the division, so Jeanne's lover isn't necessarily a creature of the forest. And the reason the Annan waters are uncrossable by normal means is due to something the Gunnerkrigg side did before building the bridge.
I hope that this isn't the end of the flashback, I've really enjoyed it. Stupid Jeanne, hurting Stalkerbot.
We're not just men of science, we're men of TROPE!Yeah, the huge guy is generally believed by the fandom to be Sir Young (and before anyone knew who Sir Young was, a few astute readers said that the huge guy looked a bit like the bull-bot). And the big-nosed hunchback is believed to be Diego. I assume the figure at the top right is the guy with the red jacket and sweet hat
.
And the fact that Diego refers to Jeanne's lover as "that traitor" makes me pretty sure that it's someone from the Court who sided with the Wood when the division was made.

And, as someone else on the GC forum pointed out, there's an arrow in the Annan here
.
Hmm, the story makes a lot more sense now I know that Ysengrin is an ancient, magical-aligned creature rather than a changed ex-human from the Court.
Slightly off topic, but I read the short story "The House of Asterion" by Borges the other day, and thought it might be of interest to other Gunnerkrigg Court fans.
Can be read here
(in both English and Spanish). It's only about a page long, so it won't take much of your time.
Anyone think it may have inspired Tom to one of the earliest arcs of this comic?
I am going to guess that the arrow in today's page
is what will make the Annan uncrossable, as Coyote mentions in the 6th panel here
. Considering that the arrow in the river was seen in the same chapter, it's good odds.
And one of those figures in Coyote's picture
seems to be carrying a bow, so I would say we've identified him as this Steadman guy.
With no other way to Gillitie and the "traitor" since the bridge hasn't been built yet, Jeanne will probably go nuts. I mean, more nuts than she is already. Uh oh.
We're not just men of science, we're men of TROPE!So, if these theories are true, the reason Jeanne's spirit can cross should be related to that arrow?
Umbran Climax◊The 'Click' makes me think that this is all we're getting of this story for a while.

Damn, that must have been incredibly hard to draw. This arc is so Made Of Win.
