Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!!

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • One of Yudias's monsters is named Giant Bulgenote . Many giggles were to be had. It appears that the English localizers caught on to this as well, as when Giant Bulge was ported to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links it was renamed to the less innuendo sounding name, "Galactic Enforcer".
    • Another of his monsters is named Cosmic Sucker. While ostensibly due to carrying a drink with a straw, the monster being female led to most viewers joking over the notion of the monster sucking something else.
  • Adorkable: Yudias' excitement over the advent of Rush Duels is absolutely infectious. Episode 7 is a prominent example, where he decides to announce all 24 types of Duel Monster cards with a rap.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • Did Kuaidul really disappear because he was too late and Yudias' body was unable to sustain his ego like he said or did he consciously decide to give up after seeing how far Yudias was willing to go to help him?
    • How much of an abusive precursor was The Creator actually? Kuaidul's performance as The Creator when revealing the truth to Zwijo paints a negative image but this is just Kuaidul giving Zwijo the motivation to do his part of Kuaidul's plan and he himself obviously doesn't view The Creator negatively. The Creator clearly showed a degree of care for Kuaidul and when preparing to depart for Earth there was a huge crowd of Velgearians, so he and Kuaidul do not seem to have been isolated or unknown at that time unlike during the events of Go Rush. Given the lack of prior lifeforms to provide company on a cosmic scale around him The Creator's response of creating the Velgearians is understandable and the game part could be chalked up to an Earthdamar's nature of being an embodiment of enjoyment and fun. Kuaidul's narration even says that the Kartumata perfected their game, so it's ambiguous how much Kartumata other than Kuaidul were actively involved in the process. The Creator didn't plan to get absorbed by Kuaidul, so it's unknown if he would have let things go on for so long without the Kartumata being aware of the true nature of their war and how much he would have let things escalate.
  • Angst? What Angst?: You would think Rovian would be in despairor be filled with unstoppable rage—after essentially being betrayed by Yuna, who was once her protégé and used to adore her to the point of calling her "Rovian-sama" and frequently having hearts in her eyes around Rovian as well as getting hysterically angry whenever Rovian is insulted. Nope. Instead, Rovian STILL reminisces about Yuna fondly even after having her and her friends jailed for opposing her!
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Considering the whole point of the third season was to find Yuamu, the Dark Meister being a new female antagonist who apparently suddenly showed up right around when she disappeared and has a deck that is a straightforward Evil Counterpart version of Yuamu's meant it was incredibly obvious to everyone out of universe that the Meister was Yuamu all along.
  • Designated Hero: Yuna in episode 96. After capturing Yuga, Manabu made a perfectly reasonable offer to Yuna: let MIK interrogate Yuga to learn how to prevent the disappearance of the Velgearians, and Manabu would let Yuna talk to Yuga afterwards. And how did Yuna react? By selfishly demanding to see Yuga immediately and not even caring that all the Velgearians were dying AND FAST. Despite that, of all those present, Manabu was really the only one to put up any sort of protest and was brought down to her level when he taunted her with his wrong conclusion that Yuga was running away from Yuna due to her single-minded obsession over him and wanted MIK to help him, all to make her not look as bad.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Mitsuko Hiramori wasn't initially too popular until her true form was revealed to be a more human-like girl that still happened to be three meters tall, at which point her popularity skyrocketed.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • The nature of how the series is connected to Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS; is it a genuine sequel, or does the series just reference SEVENS?note  Some have also tried to connect the series to previous shows, particularly Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL; aside from the obvious connection of the former heavily featuring aliens while the latter is about an afterlife often mistaken by an alien world in the fandom, there's also the fact that Yudias's flashback to the destruction of his home star system depicts a collision between two galaxies, one red and one blue, bringing to mind the Astral-Barian conflict from that show.
      • While this is partially answered by the appearance of Yuga himself, who also confirmed it being far in the past, at a time where Rush Duels shouldn't have existed, confirming it's a genuine sequel, this only made room for more questions and theories since the stone tablet appears in the series, confirming that it's behind not just Rush Duels but the creation of the entire Velgearean race, plus the reference to the book of Sevens.
    • While Yudias is advertised as the main protagonist, his name being written entirely in katakana and thus lacking the usual kanji "Yu" (遊) had fans speculating over whether his role would end up being similar to Astral or Yami Yugi, and that Yuhi (the only one of the three main characters to both have 遊 and the long sound associated with it) would become the true protagonist.
    • A theory that has started to gain traction in the fandom is that Otes is a future version of Yuga, who traveled to the past in this series, and as such is trapped into a time loop of his own making where Yuga grows up to be disillusioned, somehow loses his memories, ends up making his alternate Yuga self into the future create Rush Duels, then confronts his younger/future self, leading to that self being thrown onto the past, and this repeats an indeterminate number of times. Notably, even though Yuga is returned to his time before this can happen, the series still hasn't answered this question despite suggesting it may be true.
    • The Darkmen in Season 3 almost immediately invoked this in-universe and out, with every new episode featuring them making them seem more and more confusing, to say nothing of their leader, the Dark Meister, whose very gender was subject to this trope.
  • Evil Is Cool: The Darkmen are just as quirky and weird as the rest of the villains, but they're also badass shadow aliens with wicked designs that can turn into panthers and shadows. Bruyea is the exception due to his mama obsession, which is just seen as creepy.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Tremolo Ryugu was seen by many as a creep towards women with his disappointment at not meeting Yuamu in his debut and his relationship with his secretaries that he transformed into his Maximum Monsters. As it turns out, said secretaries are the ones being creeps about it.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Yuna is initially very attached to Rovian, fawning over everything she says or does and being very torn up every time they're separated.
    • While first criticizing Yudias' attempt at cosplaying as his beloved Meeeg-chan, Chupataro then takes a closer looks and finds himself attracted to Yudias. Even after the competition is over he still looks rather enamored at him.
    • Yudias practically confesses to Zuwijo during their second duel - for bonus points, the moment shifts to a flower field. It was enough to stun a rampaging Zuwijo into silence. Cue the flower petals flying out as Yudias smiles warmly at a shocked Zuwijo. The third opening revisits these visuals, making it seem as though Yudias is mourning him.
    • Sabyuas towards Zuwijo. Sabyuas was immediately intrigued by Zuwijo, calls Zuwijo "Zuwi", was initially tsundere towards Zuwijo, realized he was actually jealous of Dark Meister for holding Zuwijo's attention and not the other way around as he had thought before, started thinking what Zuwijo would do when making moves during Rush Duels, started subconsciously using Zuwijo's pronoun "ware" and the phrase "Zabeil du gilai velgeardt" after losing to Epoch, blushes when thinking about and talking to Zuwijo, and even got angry on Zuwijo's behalf when Yuhi insulted Zuwijo.
    • Fukamura towards Yudias. Despite immediately becoming disdainful towards Dark Meister after it was revealed she was actually Yuamu, a person from the Light, Fukamura wanted to get close to Yudias, another person from the Light. Fukamura, someone who hates social interaction to the point of encasing himself in a sphere most of the time just to hide himself from the world. Fukamura was upset when Kuaidul took over Yudias and found himself able to open up to Yudias quite easily. And what did Fukamura want if he won? To form a "social withdrawal alliance"—to be friends with—Yudias. When Yudias said they had been Mochi Pals for a while, Fukamura blushed and beamed at him.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Yuamu's absence on the poster for Season 3 led the fandom to speculate they were either being Demoted to Extra or something would happen to them. Sure enough, she disappears at the end of Season 2, and Yudias and Yuhi head off to search for her.
    • While it took far longer than many expected it to, pretty much everyone expected Otes to reappear again.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: As soon as Zuwijo becomes one of the Velgearians who disappear due to reaching the end of their lifespans, the fandom quickly deduced that they at least would eventually be revived, especially given the extensive dedication their memory is given in the third opening. Sure enough, he's revived midway through the third season's first arc.
  • Memetic Loser: Otes, aka Otei Usu, retains this from SEVENS. He takes over two-hundred episodes to get a win, and this was with Dohl helping him and including his time in SEVENS, although once he did he finally became a serious threat.
  • Memetic Molester: Chupataro. Most agree that, were there Hard Light holograms or monster spirits akin to previous series, he would almost certainly be doing rather unsavory things to Miss Mutton.
  • Memetic Mutation: Go first, lose the duel/Why the hell does anyone want to go first?!Explanation
  • Memetic Psychopath: The Ohdos in general. From how Kuaidul was wary of them to how Yuga was so easily able to turn his back on the Velgearians who were dying in droves and would WANT to be resurrected all to prevent Rush Duels from becoming Goha Duels and the misuse of Monster Reborn with him wanting to become Otes to do so to how Yuamu could so easily abandon everyone around her and destroy the lives of other people in her single-minded pursuit of Monster Reborn so she can become Otes to ensure Yuga's future, the Ohdos have repeatedly been shown to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals, regardless of who gets hurt. Apparently, to Yuga and Yuamu, Rush Duels outweigh the lives of entire species on an interstellar scale. Yuhi is the only one exempt from this, as he actually goes out of his way to do his best with helping the Velgearians and the people around him regardless of the more unpleasant implications for the future Yuga came from.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Epoch cheating by using herself as her dice is largely unpopular, with many decrying it and Yudias' and the series' supposed endorsement of it. This is despite the fact that every time Epoch cheats ends badly for her; she still loses to Yuhi, doing so against Mitsuko and Tamako was the final trigger to convert everyone into Kuaidul's Deck, and she is called out on it every time she does it and eventually gives up on doing so. Yudias himself is just too trusting to actually come to the conclusion of her cheating.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Yuna catapulted herself beyond the line far further than even Yuamu had. Not only did she team up with the Dark Matter Empire to do the aforementioned things, she has done worse for worse reasons, such as: imprisoning former close friends for opposing her including her previously precious Rovian-sama; banning those opposing her from dueling with Asaka only evading it with a duel disk so old, it was not connected to any external dueling systems; not letting any possible concerns for Epoch stop her after her card Time Machine threw Epoch into an unknown time period; having Yuhi/Otes kidnap Yudias to trap him in a centrifuge to draw out Kuaidul; talking down on Yuamu for not seeing her true motives and betraying Yuamu and the Dark Matter Empire even though Yuamu was the entire reason Goha got that powerful; and planning to sacrifice Kuaidul and Kuyamuya by making them crash into each other through a particle accelerator in order to open a road to the future. At least Yuamu had good intentions and selfless motives. Yuna is just being selfish.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: After the questionable direction Manabu's characterization went in season 2, many fans of the show weren't particularly fond of him. Season 3 did wonders for improving his reception. Not only was his character brought closer to how it was in the first season, but he went through a notable amount of development and generally helpful actions to the cast. From rightfully calling out Epoch for cheating in dice rolls and finally getting her to stop, despite winning their duel and loving of being in a position of authority, acknowledging that she is the best candidate for being captain, coming up with a way to get to the Dark Matter Empire using a hot air balloon so they can enter the empire, standing up to Phaser of all people due to not wanting Goha to control the MIK, as well as confronting his Fatal Flaw in duels by taking and defeating Zuwijo of all people in their rematch to save his friends from being imprisoned by Yuna, as well as getting to meet and even defeat his ancestor in a duel. Many after all this development warmed up to him.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Manabu gets subjected to this following his character taking some unusual directions in the second season, which feature him in wildly differing situations of morality thanks to remaining with MIK. His stint as "Commander Study" and his snapping during his Rush Duel with Zuwijo have caused many fans (and arguably even the show) to decry him as a complete Jerkass no matter how right or wrong he is following those events.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • The first arc of season two starts strong, with characters being turned to cards right off the bat. And not minor characters either, the first one is none other than Yuga himself, and if that wasn't enough just three episodes later Yuhi suffers the same fate.
    • Kuaidul Ritual Summoning in Episode 135, especially since there were absolutely no previous indications of Ritual Summoning being introduced to Yu-Gi-Oh! Rush Duel with Dark Magician Girl’s Rush Duel effect excluding the Ritual Monster Magician of Black Chaos and the existence of parody cards making it seem like Ritual Summoning would never be introduced.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Given that Rush Duels were already a Broken Base subject among the fandom, especially overseas, the fact that the next series would also focus on them (rather than returning to Master Duels as many had expected) left a bad taste in some fans' mouths.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Sevens Road Magician, Yuga Ohdo's ace monster from the previous series, being used by Yuna Goha as her ace.
    • And as of Episode 38, the return of Yuga himself made the fandom lose its collective marbles. It's the first time a previous protagonist has appeared in another entry since Yugi's brief appearances in GX, and the series makes it known for all its worth.
    • Of all characters, Schrodinger Nekoyama being the main character to interact with the Ohdos when they temporarily return to Goha City.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • As most fans would have expected, Phaser and Tremolo Ryugu pull a Heel–Face Turn at the end of their arc following the revelation of their heritage to Phaser and his defeat. However, the series had depicted them both in an incredibly unsavory light up until that point, with Phaser being an authoritarian racist and Tremolo being depicted as incredibly creepy towards women, including the three girls later confirmed to have been transformed into his Maximum Monster. As a result, many fans cried foul over their redemption, even though they genuinely do clean up their acts.
    • Yuga and Yuamu in the final arc of Season 2. He opposes the efforts to revive the Velgearians with Monster Reborn due to his knowledge of what it will do in the future but doesn't explain his reasoning until the end of the arc. To make matters more frustrating it turns out it wouldn't have worked anyway but Yuga, and Yuamu after she sides with him had no way of knowing this.
    • Even after Yuamu was revealed to be Dark Meister and she revealed her intentions of still wanting to become Otes by erasing her memories with Monster Reborn, the show STILL tries to portray her as sympathetic by making Yudias doubt wanting to chase after and oppose her and making Zwijo become absolutely loyal to her after feeling her conviction. Despite 1) Yuamu having known and befriended the Velgearians, 2) being a true life form mostly being Zwijo’s fixation with not all of the Velgearians having been fine with dying which would most likely mean they would want to be resurrected, and 3) her goal actually putting her in opposition of why Yuga wanted to become Otes (Yuamu wanted to become Otes to ensure Yuga’s original future while Yuga wanted to become Otes so duels would never leave the hands of the children in the first place, essentially erasing the original future). There was also no guarantee that Yuamu or anyone else would actually be the Otes from Yuga's time, which several characters acknowledge with Yuhi!Otes also having been unsure.
    • The show tries to make the audience feel bad for Yuna by showing how distraught she was after Yuga was sent back to the future and how desperately she wants to reunite with him. The show even had Rovian sing Yuna’s praises in Episode 128 while the others were discussing her, but it failed to make Yuna look like anything but a monster whose morality decayed. Yuna is willing to sacrifice Kuaidul and Kuyamuya by making them crash into each other after being accelerated in a particle accelerator in order to open a path to the future. Kuaidul is more understandable due to all the trouble he caused, but Kuyamuya did absolutely nothing to her and does not deserve such treatment. It seems like Yuna is sacrificing everything to reunite with Yuga, but it is not acceptable nor noble to sacrifice others.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Episode 109, the debut of Contact Fusion, has some gorgeous CG models for the new monsters appearing in it and three very visually appealing battle scenes, on top of really leaning into the seemingly extraterrestrial nature of the Dark Matter Empire.
  • Woolseyism: The dub renames MIK to "The Secrecy", which fits better with their No Such Agency status.
