- Character Perception Evolution: During the peak of 4Kids' hatedom (mid-2000s to early-2010s), Mad Dog was widely disliked in the West for his dub voice being a high-pitched, childish parody of Mike Tyson, which heavily clashes with his muscular, battle-scarred build. It didn't help that the original Japanese version gave Mad Dog a Baritone of Strength. Mad Dog's dub voice was often held up as one of 4Kids' worst miscastings. Some time after 4Kids went bankrupt, the hatred for them would die down (though not enough for them to be Vindicated by History), and Mad Dog gained an ironic fanbase who believe that his dub voice is so inappropriate that it's hilarious, as well as making him much more memorable than if he had a deep voice like you'd expect. Consequently, Mad Dog is an Ensemble Dark Horse, and one of the series' most popular One-Shot Characters, in the West.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Mad Dog, specifically in the English dub, is one of the most popular One-Shot Characters in the series because his voice is hilariously inappropriate.
- Realism-Induced Horror: Saruyama/Shroud's methods of brainwashing Kaiser/Zane are disturbingly realistic. Unlike Saiou/Sartorius, who uses supernatural powers to literally Mind Control his followers, Saruyama simply takes advantage of Kaiser's predicament and convinces him to willingly change with words alone.
- So Bad, It's Good: Mad Dog's voice in the 4Kids dub is infamous for its Vocal Dissonance—sounding like a child coming from a muscular, grown man with a menacing growl—but he is an Ensemble Dark Horse because of how hilariously ridiculous his voice sounds.
