Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 16 The Scars Of Defeat

  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Joey. Sure, Kaiba is a jerk most of the time and this episode is no exception. However, Joey instigated the whole situation by being a hothead. Initially, Kaiba gave the group a few serious (and not even rude!) words and went on his way. Not only did even Joey's friends tell him to let Kaiba be, but Kaiba himself was taking the higher road and ignoring Joey. Only because Joey refused to back off, continually provoking and challenging Kaiba entirely of his own accord, and even blocking his path at one point, did Kaiba finally retaliate. In short, this is one instance where Joey really did deserve what Kaiba gave him since the whole situation could've been avoided if Joey just shut his mouth. Even in the dub, Kaiba wasn't too hostile and Joey's hot headed nature lead him to utter humiliation from Kaiba. It also doesn't help Joey's case that, once Kaiba relents and gives him the duel he wants, Joey puts on possibly the worst performance in the entire series, sending his monsters to die in battles he knows they can't win for no real reason other than possibly not knowing how to play them in defense on Kaiba's new duel disk system and not asking him how to do so, making him look like a total moron and making it hard to sympathize with his wounded pride once he inevitably loses.
