Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell

Go To

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Near the start of "Conceal and Gary," Claude calls Gary, who is recovering from a crippling gunshot wound, a "piece of shit" and that he hates him. At the end of the episode, Claude uses the last of his remaining strength to save Gary by shooting Rainbow Pie, even shouting a Big "NO!" while doing so.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The entire plot of the finale of season 3, "The Dammed," contains countless examples of this trope since the plot centers on Mengele's attempt to take over Hell with a cloned Hitler, especially since Claude (who is Jewish) is the central character instead of Gary. One line is particularly offensive for anyone familiar with Mengele's most famous experiments, yet it's still hilarious. In addition, the episode opens with Benji reminiscing about his mortal days as a pedophile and child molester.
Gary: "You'll just sew any two goddamned things together, won't you?!"
  • Funny Background Event: When we see the news on the TV screen in "Newcronomicon," an icon on the lower left corner of the screen says that Atlanta, GA is sunny and 86 degrees, but the Evangelicals at the book burning are all wearing winter clothing and some of the trees are bereft of leaves.
  • Growing the Beard: While twisted fun in season 1, the show comes into its own when Satan literally grows his beard in season 2. Along with eschewing scenes on earth for more time in Hell, Claude's silly facial expressions (and to a lesser extent, facial and body language from Troy and Benji, likely as a way for writers to squeeze additional dialogue into an 11-minute show), and the introduction of Troy in season 3.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Dustin Diamond appears in an episode as himself, having been condemned to Hell. It turned out to be Diamond's last TV role before succumbing to cancer.
  • Not Too Dead to Save the Day: Claude is presumed dead or dying from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest until he regains conscious just long enough to shoot Rainbow Pie. Being a demon, Claude's injuries end up being debilitating rather than fatal.
  • Ship Tease:
    • The Homoerotic Subtext gags between Gary and Claude (for example, one character accidentally bumping the other's crotch with his butt) and the Ho Yay touching, of course, played for both laughs and fanservice. Their actors have also made multiple jokes implying that their antagonism is fueled by sexual tension. And of course, Gary has never hinted at a lack of sexual interest in Claude like he has toward both Troy and Benji.
    • Played purely for laughs with Benji and the Masturbating Spider. Benji, at bare minimum, isn't bothered when it has its way with him and gives him a Face Full of Alien Wing-Wong. In "Gary Bunda Demon Killer," it's the only character seen actually shedding tears at his hoax funeral.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Troy was originally this for Claude during the first first few episodes of season 3, becoming Gary's new rival and at times, supervisor, sharing a similar personality, and many of the same lines that would have been given to Claude, albeit with a different delivery. Troy would end up developing his own personality as the season progressed, and even his own backstory elements once Claude returned to the show in "Golden Fiddle Week."
  • Ugly Cute: Many fans who like Rainbow Pie and Windstorm the aborted fetuses consider them to be "ugly adorable." That is, visually just plain ugly and/or creepy, but adorable and endearing due to their voices and behavior. In the same way, they likewise consider the fetuses to be Cute and Psycho.
Rainbow Pie: "Do you got the thing that make the guns go pap pap pap?"
Satan: "Offf cooourrrse I do! He're's an AR15 with a bump stock."
