- Lost in Medias Res: The anime adaptation skips Volume 1, meaning anime-only viewers are confused about the characters and the settings. It doesn't help that some of the dialogue references the the first volume, which loses context for these viewers. Richard Eisenbeis admitted in his early review
that viewers had to read the novels and manga to understand the anime. The situation wasn't made much better when director Takaharu Ozaki admitted that the crew wanted to focus on the character drama and not the worldbuilding, despite much of said drama also being in Volume 1, drawing derision from critics and fans alike. - Spiritual Successor: The series appears to draw influence from both I, Robot, with its emphasis on diagnosing atypical behavior of robots, and Ghost in the Shell, with the Cyberpunk setting, heavy emphasis on brain-diving, and Echika bearing a goodly resemblance to Motoko Kusanagi.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Even disregarding the lack of Volume 1 being included; Echika Hieda is intended to be the top of the department, particularly in brain-diving. While she is shown to be just that, it becomes such a Crippling Overspecialization that it makes her The Load when she has to do anything that doesn't involve a Car Chase. The amount of times she's attacked by criminals, or kidnapped gets to the point where it becomes an unintentional Running Gag that can happen multiple times in the span of an arc only exacerbates these issues.
