Yo-kai Watch: Forever Friends

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • The third act in particular is extremely contentious. Many dislike it for blatantly trying to promote The Merch by rapidly introducing new Yo-kai/forms then almost as abruptly writing them out, as well as Shien being Hijacked by Ganon. However, the various new Yo-kai and the actions scenes are rather endearing to some and fans of Overseer are always happy to see him get more content.
    • The ties to Yo-kai Watch: Shadowside via the introduction of Genjuu versions of Genbu and Byakko, a cameo from Ashura as well as incorporating its main antagonists. Are these a neat way to connect the show, or needless additions to the plot in the form of glorified cameos that amount to nothing and complicate the timeline and lore?
  • Contested Sequel: The film is rather divisive between those who went in, having seen the posters, and were expecting a more emotional, character-drive story, and those who appreciate the action. There are also those who aren't particularly happy about the changes to the lore.
  • Memetic Mutation: As Yasha Enma features a prominent blue flame in his eye, a lot of people joke that he's sans.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The film reveals that Lord Enma the Ancient had a son, had been saved by human children, and that the younger Lord Enma was born from a combination of Shien's goodness and Itsuki's soul. This is a very major overhaul of the lore, which also caused a lot of continuity problems with previous games, to the point a Lord Enma Exposition Dump was given to Yo-kai Watch 4's pura pura update to rectify it. The changes were overall not well received, making the timeline needlessly complicated and make Enma the Ancient come off as much more of a Jerkass.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Shutendoji's whole goal is he wants to overthrow the Enma and restore his people's rule of the Yo-kai World, so the fact he was acting as Shien's aide raises a lot of questions and opens a lot of potential plot threads. However, all he really does is sit around, drink, smirk a little, then leave when Overseer shows up.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The film shows that the Ashura Gouenmaru, Douketsu's signature weapon, had once been a relic of the Overseer. It's never explained how it came to be in his hands, nor how Douketsu got it later, with a frame during the credits simply showing him training with it.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Shutendoji of all people appearing was quite a surprise, even if he didn't do much.
    • Massiface makes a cameo.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: It's definitely Lighter and Softer compared to Yo-kai Watch: Shadowside - The Return of the Oni King, and arguably Yo-kai Watch: Shadowside too, but it really doesn't shy away from the sheer brutality of Tamamo's method of soul collection, as well as dealing with themes such as grief and suicide.
