Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Nearly every time Yoda is characterized in the EU, he's mostly serious albeit not without his Not So Above It All moments. Here? Not so much. He's much more in line with his portrayal in The Empire Strikes Back, making that not an Obfuscating Stupidity act that he drops later - he can be wise and solemn, but he also has strange habits and preferences and loves to Troll people.
  • Cult Classic: It hasn't seen as much recognition as other Legends books, but many hail it as an overlooked gem for its excellent writing, particularly on the often secretive Yoda. To put it in perspective, it was finally added to The Essential Legends Collection in 2024 and re-released as an unabridged audio-book as part of the 20th anniversary .
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Quite deliberately. Whie knows a Jedi will kill him. When he and Anakin ambush each other then realize they're on the same side, Whie hugs him saying, "I'm so glad you're not here to kill me!" A puzzled but bemused Anakin agrees. In six months, Whie is the first person Anakin kills when invading the Temple.
    • Yoda's view on loving and grieving here is quite a bit more nuanced and empathic than the brief, almost dismissive answer he'll give to Anakin when he asks in Revenge of the Sith. Not only is that because he's not particularly close to Anakin, who doesn't look up to him like the two Padawans do, but another several months of the war have seen a lot more Jedi dying, which always hurts Yoda. By the time Anakin asks him, he's even killed Dooku, thereby cutting off any fading possibility of redeeming him, and he doesn't seem to have any regret about killing someone Yoda had cared very deeply about.
  • Narm: The novel treats rightfully Scout's greatest fears of being sent to the Agricultural Corps if she doesn't perform good enough, but the over-the-topness of the premise undermines all the drama. That a fighter acceptably competent by the Jedi standards might get sent to plant potatoes for the rest of her life, for not reaching a slightly higher level, is so extreme and unreasonable that it sounds straight out of a parody in midst of a novel otherwise full of excellent writing.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The description of the glimpse Dooku gets of what would happen if Yoda ever fell to the Dark Side. It's such a terrifying prospect, Dooku is horrified he even tried to turn Yoda to the Dark Side and realizes if it happened, Sidious would have been a fly in comparison to what an evil version of Yoda would be.
  • Tear Jerker:
