- Audience-Alienating Ending: The last book in the series took over four years to write, four times as long as the previous volumes. Despite the long preparation time, the ending falls flat to most readers due to many reasons.
- The conclusion to the ongoing tension between the characters was unsatisfying. Zhao Gao wasn't as big of a threat as the Big Bad he's made out to be, thus making the stakes much lower than it's supposed to be.
- According to Word of God, the shop owner stays with the doctor until the latter dies, then afterwards he'll go find Fusu. Shippers aren't happy with this solution, seeing it as two-timing and undermining both of the shop owner's most important relationships.
- The characterization of recurring characters in general is disappointing to many fans. The shop owner seems to suffer the most from this, as seen in the bullet above.
- Idiosyncratic Ship Naming: Chinese fans call the ship between the shop owner and the doctor "Red Lock" (赤锁/锁赤) after their most iconic outfit/accessory: the red dragon shirt and the jade lock charm.
- Portmanteau Couple Name: The ship between Fusu and the shop owner (Gan Luo) is called "Fugan" (扶甘) or "Ganfu" (甘扶) in Chinese.
- Ship-to-Ship Combat: The fandom's shippers are divided into two big ships: shop owner/Fusu and shop owner/doctor. The fact that the doctor is Fusu's reincarnation, and Fusu's actions after being revived make their rivalry even more serious. The author knows this and tries to reconcile the two by making both ships possible in the ending, but it ends up being hated by both sides instead.
