- Alternative Character Interpretation: In Chinese, the pieces next to the general are labeled as "仕" or "士" depending on the color, which led to differing interpretations about whether they're meant to represent scholars/advisors under the General or the General's bodyguards due to the character's meaning being ambiguous when used on its own and the pieces being meant to defend the General. The standard English translation "Advisor" doesn't carry this over since there's only one way to interpret the term.
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Xiangqi is also a very popular game in Vietnam, where it is known as co tuong. Multiple Xiangqi champions are Vietnamese.
