X-Men (2021)

  • Awesome Art: The book is practically a showcase for Pepe Larraz and it shows.
  • Broken Aesop: The Lord of the Brood arc features a fight between Jean and Scott, with the former staunchly against the latter's ideas of genociding the Brood after Broo loses control over some of them. The story leans towards Jean being right, and that there's the possibility that the Brood can somehow evolve beyond mindless killing machines, ultimately redeeming themselves. Except the next (and final) time we see them, Polaris is using them as a Zerg Rush to attack Orchis. Notably, the Brood aren't siding with the X-Men on their own volition; they're still being controlled by Broo. So the culmination of their story about redemption and growth ends with them being used as mindless killing machines. Guess they can't change after all.
  • Complete Monster: Cordyceps Jones is a sapient alien fungus and Social Climber crime lord who hops from body to body. Cordyceps Jones is the founder of an intergalactic crime den known as Gameworld, where wealthy sadists bet on the most creative ways in which entire planets can be destroyed. Cordyceps Jones has wiped out billions of lives and holds trillions more in bondage, promising the slaves who run Gameworld that if they ever stop serving him, he'll destroy their entire planets.
  • The Scrappy: Talon has very few fans due to her status as a Satellite Love Interest. During the run she does nothing on her own and is just relegated to being Synch's girlfriend. When she died her death was met with relentless mockery and ridicule from the fanbase.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Synch and Talon's relationship. Yes they spent centuries together in the vault, but we barely see anything of their relationship other than Talon bucking Synch up when he's sad and them having sex a couple of times. She comes across less as a partner and more as walking plot development for Synch. By the time Talon ends up dying, this hasn't changed at all.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Rogue's reunion with Destiny her other adoptive mother, for the first time since Necrosha was quite anticipated, so much so Jonathan Hickman himself wanted to write it. Only when it does happen in Issue #9, their brief interaction consists of Rogue saying hello and Irene mentioning that she hopes Rogue will rejoin her and Mystique in the future, whilst the rest of the scene is Destiny belittling Gambit, her new son-in-law, without talking to Rogue (whom she hasn’t seen in years) again.
    • Talon spent centuries in the Vault, away from her family and friends. You would think there would be at least one issue focusing on her reconnecting with the people she hasn't seen in centuries. She never talks to Logan, Gabby or Daken and just ends up as a Satellite Love Interest for Synch.
  • Unexpected Character: While much of the roster was not a huge surprise (particularly Cyclops and Wolverine, since neither of them was on a team at the moment), a lot of people were surprised to see Synch of all mutants on the team, since he’s usually considered a C-Lister at best.
