- Awesome Music: The title theme
, which it also shared with Soul Music. - Can't Un-Hear It: For the animated film, in addition to Christopher Lee as Death (who quickly became a staple in Discworld adaptations), the performances of Annette Crosbie as Granny Weatherwax, June Whitfield as Nanny Ogg and Jane Horrocks as Magrat perfectly encapsulate the characters.
- Genius Bonus: The Felmets' plan (based on the Fool's ideas) is to have Hwel write a play that presents them as the good guys and King Verence and the witches as villains, altering public perceptions. This is exactly what the original play Macbeth was, with Shakespeare whitewashing his patron King James I and VI's ancestors and painting Macbeth as a blackguard, when the historical record suggests he was seen as rather a decent king.
- With a bit of Shakespeare's Richard III in there, particularly in having the previous king depicted as an ugly cripple. At the time the book was written, it was thought that Richard's hunchback was an invention of Shakespeare.
- Magnificent Bastard:
- King Verence was the beloved lord of Lancre until he was murdered by the treacherous Lord Felmut. Unable to rest, his great vitality in life allows his spirit to manipulate objects, and thus lures and traps the cat of the witch "Nanny" Ogg to guide her to him and plan his vengeance. When Nanny is captured by Felmut, he tries to slay his slayer and rescue her, but is stopped by the wise "Granny" Weatherwax who saves her peer instead. Escaping by having Nanny carry a castle brick, he plots with them to move time forward so he son can age and return to claim his throne. When Felmut hosts a play to denounce the witches, Verence possesses his actor son and reveals the truth for all Lancre to see. This drives Felmut to madness and death and allows Verence to pass on at last.
- 1997 Animated Film: Esmeralda "Granny" Weatherwax is the stern, stoic, and outwardly sinister leader of the Lancre coven of witches. After saving the newborn prince by intimidating a soldier into backstabbing his commander, Granny sends the infant off with a traveling acting troupe to while having his crown hidden among the props until to keep both safe from Lord Felmut. Not wanting to get involved further in politics, Granny only steps in when Felmut begins publicly shaming the witches and and the common folk lose their respect for them. After murdering a speeding cart driver for not moving around her, Granny plots a great magical spell to move Lancre forward in time and spurs the now actor Prince Tomjon back home to fulfill his destiny. After trying and failing to destroy the evil Lady Felmut's mind, Granny ensures Lancre has an heir after Tomjon refuses the throne.
- One-Scene Wonder: In the Animated Adaptation, the demon the witches summon up becomes this in a way he wasn't in the book — partly this is because he's the best-looking, best-animated character in the miniseries, but a lot of it is also due to the added joke of his voice suddenly goes from Evil Sounds Deep to high-pitched Luvvie when Granny tells him to stop mucking about.
