- Ensemble Dark Horse: Returning War Vet convict Brandon is typically regarded as the best part of the film even by those who dislike it, and as one of the best, if not the best, character of the series.
- Fanon Discontinuity: Quite a few fans loathe and want to disregard the ending scene due to not doing anything besides giving the two most popular survivors of the new cast pointless and bizarre Face Heel Turns and anticlimactic deaths and setting up a Sequel Hook of a new hillkiller that never did get followed up on.
- Moral Event Horizon: Chavez crosses it by leaving Alex and Nate to be killed by Three-Finger in order to try and get the money.
- Special Effects Failure: All of the CGI effects.
- Squick: After Three-Finger kills Chavez, he cuts his head open, revealing his brain. Then he starts eating it.
- Tear Jerker: When Three-Finger finds his son murdered by a group of escaped convicts. You could tell that not only did they really love each other, they were the only ones who would. The criminals all had the choice to fit in with society but took it for granted for their own selfish reasons. Three-Finger and his son could never have hoped to have the same chances as them.
