World's Finest (1941)

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: In issue #71, Clark and Bruce's chat about swapping identities temporarily sounds awkward out of context:
Superman: "Hmm.. If we fit each other's roles as well as we do each other's costumes— we'll do fine. Though, frankly, yours is the harder job!"
  • Magazine Decay: World's Finest was an anthology title, featuring different characters living solo adventures, becoming a Superman/Batman crossover book in 1954 (thirteen years after its first issue).
  • Memetic Mutation: The picture of Batman slapping his protege Robin in mid-conversation is taken from issue #153. Published in 1965, the single-panel illustration has inspired a series of parodies featuring custom-captioned speech bubbles on 4chan, Reddit and elsewhere since 2008, explained with details by Know Your Meme here.
  • Narm: Issue #201 has Superman confronted by a giant illusion of his father, Jor-El, who disapproves of his son's actions and spanks him. The wording of Superman's reaction has aged in a way that gives this scene very different connotations nowadays, making it hard to take it seriously:
Superman: "Punish me, daddy! I deserve it!"
