Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The Redbook audio soundtrack in the TurboGrafx-CD version.
  • Goddamned Boss: The giant mushroom boss. It's not so hard to not die, but it depends on luck if you can hit it at all.
  • Porting Disaster: The Mega Drive version had its graphics horribly mutilated, even worse music than the arcade version, and is missing the shmup segments from Rounds 5, 6, 9, 12, and 13 due to lack of ROM space. To compensate, it does have options to alter the difficulty and credits however.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: the first stage music resembles "Tokyo Reggie" by Masayoshi Takanaka quite a bit.
  • That One Attack:
    • The Armor King's Rocket Punch. This attack of the penultimate boss is the only time he allows himself to be vulnerable, and it chases you around the entire battlefield until it hits you. And it's also faster than you and, like most attacks, kills in one hit.
    • The Final Boss has only one attack other than collision that kills in a single hit, the fiery breath. However, it's hard to avoid, lasts relatively long and it's more nasty than any other instakill because the final battle is also the Point of No Continues.
  • That One Boss:
    • The ice round boss is significantly more frustrating than others, moving erratically making its weak point hard to hit, and spamming ice crystals that block your shots and expand when you hit them.
    • The cactus boss. It traverses towards your position very fast, has a ton of health and leaves a tail with a massive hitbox every time it moves, meaning it's the easiest boss to kill you with Collision Damage.
    • The penultimate boss is even worse, because of his homing fist that kills you in one hit and is very very hard to dodge, as well as the weak point he covers up when he retrieves his fist.
    • The final boss is easier than the three aforementioned bosses at first glance... But if you lose all your lives, you die permanently, no continues, and the fiery breath in the first phase suddenly becomes much more dreaded. It also has two forms, unlike most bosses.
