- Demonic Spiders: The frogs (which are extremely hard to hit before they jump into you and unlike most enemies have to be axed twice) and the literal spiders that appear in droves in later stages.
- Goddamned Bats: Bees, rocks, bats, octopuses, swordfishes, they all make navigating through the flames and bottomless pits much harder, especially if you don't have your tomahawk.
- It's the Same, Now It Sucks! Wonder Boy Returns and Wonder Boy Returns Remix. The general fan consensus was that returning to the original gameplay was unnecessary, as it was not anything that Monster Lair or the Adventure Island series had already done better. It doesn't help that the game looks more like a dated budget mobile game and was released in the shadow of the Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap remake and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. And then there was a somewhat negative reaction for then spontaneously replacing a reimagined sequel based on the original with a direct remake using the same assets that doesn't differ from the original release too much.
- Polished Port: The Sega Master System port largely retained the arcade version's graphics and gameplay, and simplified the HUD. It also added several exclusive levels to boot.
- Porting Disaster: The SG-1000 was already underpowered by the time it launched, and the Wonder Boy port shows. There are no scrolling backgrounds, the skateboard and several other powerups are gone, and the levels are either simplified or cut altogether.
