- Aluminum Christmas Trees: The opening scene, where the boss of a real estate company forcibly evicts villagers to make way for development, is a real issue in China
. Due to the lack of private property ownership laws, real estate companies often collude with officials to drive rural residents off their property, with minimal compensation. - Anvilicious: The film isn't exactly subtle about its Patriotic Fervor message and who the heroes and villains are, inverting Hollywood action film stereotypes by pitting Chinese protagonists against Western antagonists. This led to many Western critics to write the movie off as a piece of propaganda, although it is not without commentary on social issues in China, such as the forced eviction scene mentioned above.
- Complete Monster: "Big Daddy" (played by Frank Grillo) is the head of the Dylan Corps mercenary group who are helping the Red Scarf rebels take over a country in Africa. Seeking a doctor who has the cure for a viral outbreak, Big Daddy's mercenaries storm the Prime Minister's palace and murder him and his entourage after he refuses to disclose the doctor's location. Once they find his location, Big Daddy's mercenaries accidentally murder the doctor, and later execute dozens of innocent medical workers and civilians. When Big Daddy realizes the cure for the outbreak is in Pasha's blood, he and his mercenaries storm a factory and murder several workers and guards in an attempt to kidnap her. Big Daddy later kills General Inuwa, his employer, and takes control of his rebels. Hell-bent on killing Leng Feng and kidnapping Pasha, Big Daddy sends his mercenaries and rebels back to the factory, where they indiscriminately slaughter dozens of civilians trying to run to safety. While General Inuwa was hesitant about killing the Chinese and tried to stop the outbreak, Big Daddy only cared about completing his missions and causing as much chaos as possible.
- Funny Moments:
- After finding out Leng was in the quarantine zone, Rachel describes all the horrible symptoms of the Lamanla virus. Leng's response. "It's fine. I have health insurance."
- Rachel says she alerted the US Embassy...by Tweeting at them.
- After realizing the US government has abandoned her, she angrily gets out of Leng's car only to find a pride of lions eating a zebra right outside. She gets back in.
- Tundu's mother takes down a mercenary by repeatedly smashing his head with bottles.
- Zhuo, the factory's head of security, is disarmed and shot with his own gun. Good thing it's an airsoft gun.
- After she's freed, Tundu's mother shouts "Go to Hell!" and body slams a fallen rebel.
- Rachel's response to Leng forcing her onto the helicopter.
- Special Effect Failure:
- The scene where the helicopter is shot down and crashes uses very obvious CGI.
- A tank runs over a person who is obviously just a dummy.
- Leng's Big Damn Heroes moment has him driving a CGI tank that's way too fast to be real.
