Wolf Song: The Movie

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: though downplayed, there was for a moment much rejoicing when Kara stabs the Death Alpha at the very end
  • Complete Monster: The Death Alpha is a ruthless killer who, despite his goals not requiring bloodshed, actively tortured and brutalises everyone around him, and manipulates those around him into doing so whenever he deems something unimportant. He is highly sadistic, taking pleasure in the death and suffering of others, is a terrible father to his daughters, Raina especially, and even if it might seem like he cares for his brother, according to Word of God and supplementary sources, the deal was made out of desperation, greed, and a lust for power, thus meaning that to him, everyone, even his own relatives and subordinates, are all pawns in some twisted game of his, and even if he spares someone, it's almost certain that he's gonna cause them a great deal of pain and suffering.
  • Crack Pairing: some fans will ship Cobalt and Alador together, which would be Foe Yay in every retrospect, except that in the movie proper, the two don't exactly get along together. In fact, Cobalt ends up torturing Alador to death, thus making such a ship between them become this
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Some prefer the idea of Kara ending up with Blaze instead of Arrow. Considering that Kara and Blaze both survive the movie while Arrow dies horribly at the end, this ship is still entirely plausible.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • Even with such a small fanbase, Wolf Song has its base significantly overlap with that of Warrior Cats and its sister series, due to both being xenofictional works, focusing primarily on one particular species, with similar lore, and a lot of fighting to boot, to the point where many consider the former to be a Spiritual Successor of the latter.
    • Name any animated wolf series, and there's a good chance you'll come across someone watching whose also a fan of Wolf Song, especially if it's a Web Animation series, and doubly so if at least one of the characters shares a voice actor with someone from Wolf Song. Some of the animators themselves are fans of it.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Alador admitting not to be the pure of heart in his final moments is already a Gut Punch, and a massive one if that. However, it gets worse when you discover that he is voiced by none other than Cougar MacDowall VA, who would later become the source of many creator controversies, mostly regarding suggestive thumbnails for fan music videos of popular indie games and webtoons.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: This wouldn't be the only work to to feature wolf associated with death; Puss in Boots: The Last Wish released seven years later. Cobalt claims to be the "grim reaper" at one point, but is completely unable to back it up; meanwhile, the Wolf from The Last Wish mostly only appears when Puss in Boot's life is at stake as a representation of his mortality and, unlike Cobalt, really is death itself.
  • Les Yay: During the fight scene with Kara, Mia, and Mai they make gestures that look like they're flirting with Kara. Kara also calls Mira's fur beautiful when they first meet.
  • Narm Charm: despite the dialogue being clunky, it does altogether still manage to convey emotions. Sometimes the emotional impact can make people forget that very few members of the cast have realistic fur patterns, especially during the death scenes.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: just how many people exactly will only watch Wolf Song for the various Cobalt scenes? We may never know
  • So Bad, It's Good: this is a film about wolves, however the art style is basic, the designs are all over the place, and there is plenty of haphazard dialogue. That being said, it has its amusing elements, the occasional bit of poignant dialogue, and several noteworthy fight scenes, in addition to being a feature length web animation, one of very few in existence.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Many don't find Kara and Arrow's romance believable, especially when most of Arrow's previous interactions with Kara where hostile before the two develop attraction towards one another.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Many where disappointed that Onora and Yazmine where essentially given nothing to do despite the former being a love interest to Kara's brother Alador and the latter being Arrow's sister. Ditto for Mira the mute healer.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Despite Word of God admitting she would have had Kara and Alador as wolves from the beginning, it would also have been an interesting story had the two remained dogs as well. (Or at least still had they're dog features when they changed color like the floppy ears) as it would have given a lot more emphasis an Fantastic Racism and Interspecies Romance had they done that.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Despite being The Dragon to the Death Alpha and racking a kill count of at least 5, including another popular character, Cobalt is one of the most popular characters in the film, mostly due to his Dirty Coward tendencies and him regularly lashing out at his pack mates in an often comical manner. Oh and he is voiced by the editor of the film. His popularity with fans is such that the creator herself has become aware of the number of people who watch solely for the Cobalt scenes.
