  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Of all the narrators of the show, Freya from Season 4 is easily the most divisive. Her actions are seen in a rather negative light, and her character is not very endearing to a lot of people, coming off as incredibly manipulative and awful.
    • Kat from Season 9 has also seen a bit of divisiveness, due to her diva personality and wishy-washy acknowledgement of her flaws.
  • The Chris Carter Effect:
    • Although the nature of the series leaves many questions fully unresolved, Season 6 is the worst offender, to the point where it's one of the most divisive seasons to date.
    • Season 9 ending the way it did really put many fans off.
  • Contested Sequel:
    • Are Seasons 5 and 8 better than Seasons 4 and 6? If so, can they stand on par with Seasons 2 and 3? Notably, Season 7 avoided this, for the most part.
    • Season 9 is very contentious, though not due to the story itself, but to the way it's presented. Most episodes consist primarily of Kat repeating the same passages several times in slightly different ways, which can make relistening to it a chore.
  • Even Better Sequel:
    • Seasons 2 and 3 are widely seen as the best two seasons of the show, with compelling characters and a tight narrative with good payoff. Season 1, while still regarded as one of the better seasons, is often seen to have a somewhat slow start that can make jumping into it harder.
    • Season 7 is also seen as this to the previous seasons, with a more return-to-form narrative that many felt was better developed, as well as being one of the few seasons to have a relatively happy and hopeful ending.
  • Tough Act to Follow: Seasons 4 and 6 are often not seen as living up to the previous ones, especially Season 2 and 3.
    • Season 4's narrator, Freya, is not a very popular character in the fandom for her terrible actions and somewhat abhorrent personality.
    • Season 6 was met with some divisiveness for potentially introducing some supernatural elements into what was a (mostly) grounded show, as well as some fans feeling that the season had No Ending, with more loose threads hanging than usual.
