- Signature Scene: The most oft-remembered and quoted scene in the film is when Simon, while leaving a lecture on U.S. government, tells off Mr. Pitkannan, the very haughty professor in charge of the class, with a surprisingly intuitive analysis on the Constitution to thunderous applause from the room.
- Tear Jerker:
- Simon running out of the van after meeting and being rejected by his son is heartbreaking. He falls down in a pile of leaves to die, imitating an earlier story about a dying dog. Monty picks him up, telling him he's not a dog and showing him that there are still people who love him.
- The scene in the library when Simon is looking at how grimy he is and asking for a bath is pretty damn sad, particularly with how embarrassed Simon looks at having to ask it.
