Witchaven

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: The witch in both games actually goes down after only a handful of sword swings. The real trick is that you have to fight through a huge level to get to her, and in the final chamber she's accompanied by a large mob of mooks, monsters, and demons.
  • Demonic Spiders: The troll enemies that throw a chunk of meat at you. Your armor cannot defend you against their attacks and do a lot of damage.
  • Fake Difficulty: Facing the witch and having her use that HP to 1 spell while you are around multiple enemies. Not only will you have your HP set to 1, but the next attack could be your end.
  • Follow the Leader: At the time, most reviewers criticized the game for being derivative of Heretic and Hexen due to the similar dark fantasy setting. However, Witchaven distinguished itself from those games with an emphasis on melee combat as opposed to ranged spellcasting like in the Heretic/Hexen series.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • Much like in Corridor 7: Alien Invasion, this game features a jumpscare mechanic which has a ghostly horned skull pop up to scare you during gameplay, but not doing anything else. This phenomena is never explained, and a general consensus among players is that the feature is more of a nuisance that serves no other purpose.
    • Several weapons have two different attacks with differing damage values and start-up times. What makes this veer into Scrappy Mechanic is that which attack you use is randomly chosen, making combat feel awkward with these weapons.
  • That One Attack: The witch's HP to 1 spell.
