  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Annagramma is awful at identifying implicit intentions, social constructs, and people's feelings, and is mentioned in several places to just not get how humans work (most noticeably in this book). She also has a special interest in Magick: she's extremely knowledgeable about it, gets really frustrated when people misunderstand or demean it, frames her worldview around it and struggles to use other worldviews. These traits may indicate she's somewhere on Roundworld's autism spectrum.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Roland goes into a berserker rage against the Bogles— to the point that the Nac Mac Feegle need to tell him to stop getting carried away fighting— at the realization that they eat away people’s memories, because this means destroying the people’s entire self-identities. The year after this book was published, Terry Pratchett would reveal his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease, giving the scene a truly devastating Reality Subtext.
