- Adorkable:
- Sakura gets easily flustered over the smallest of things and goes bright red more times than you can count. His social awkwardness and embarrassment when people express gratitude or affection makes it clear that he's a lot more soft than he wants to admit.
- Nirei practically embodies this trope from the moment of his introduction when he falls flat on his face while trying way too hard to look like a flashy delinquent. This only ramps up when he drops the act and reveals himself to be a cowardly but enthusiastic kid who just wants to help Bofurin protect the town in any way he can. His freckles, fluffy hair, and admiration for all of the cool boys around him only adds to this.
- Diagnosed by the Audience:
- Takiishi is commonly thought to be autistic. This would also explain some of his other more odd interpersonal behaviors, such as lack of social skills, general apathy with other people's emotions, emotional attachment to physical objects, and only pay attention to a single-minded obsession while ignoring everything else. Chapter 155 also implies that he has some degree of prosopegnosia/face blindness, which is often comorbid with autism.
- Sugishita is thought to be neurodivergent and even selectively mute, as while he can properly communicate with people he trusts, he still show signs of struggle in social situations overall and tends to speaking very coarsely, if at all when he's with unfamilliar people.
- Many think Suo has some kind of eating disorder and his claim of being on a diet should not be taken at face value. To date, he hasn't been shown eating anything with his friends and only opts for drinks.
- Uryu is also thought to be selectively mute, as while he has a VA he rarely makes sounds at all, and him being less emotive can be a sign of mental illness or anxiety disorder, and his twin Seiryu seems to have an understanding of his situation instead of just being a simple Translator Buddy.
- Choji is speculated to have depression, with his behavior corresponding to its general symptoms, including loss of interest in his former hobbies, irritability and restlessness, difficulty concentrating, persistent sad or "empty" mood. After his Heel–Face Turn, he also spots shades of feeling worthlessness or guilt after realizing what he had done, which he at times trying to put on a brave face to not worry his subordinates. He's also thought to have ADHD for his inattention (consistently losing things, difficulty in managing, easily distracted and being forgetful) and hyperactivity-impulsivity (never stay in one place, excessive talking, being impulsive and hasty regarding decision-making).
- Estrogen Brigade: WIND BREAKER has many female fans due to the series having a Cast Full of Pretty Boys, as well as it's focus on the slice of life interactions between them outside of fight scenes.
- Fan Nickname: Sakunyan for Sakura due to his catlike personality.
- Fanon: Despite being a pretty grounded series, a few headcanons have sparked surrounding the characters.
- Suo's mysterious nature has led to various assumptions by the fanbase. His claim of being "on a diet" and refusing to eat anything he's offered is thought of as a cover for an eating disorder, see Diagnosed by the Audience above.
- One theory for why Suo is wearing the eyepatch is because he is missing an eye, affecting his depth perception and is thus embarrassed to eat in front of others, since he may have trouble with the utensils.
- Some think that Suo's family may have mafia connections, which would explain his tendency to be vague when people ask him questions as well as his formal training in martial arts. This was further exacerbated when chapter 169 came out, showing him as the only classmate with a swimsuit that covered his chest, leading some to believe he's hiding yakuza tattoos.
- The fans will sometimes assign the main trio Animal Motifs, with Sakura as a cat, Nirei as a puppy dog, and Suo as a fox. Sakura's motifs were already set since he was partially designed after the author's pet cat and has been compared to one in the actual series. Nirei however is depicted with a puppy motif due to his excitable nature and wholesomeness, while Suo is portrayed as a fox thanks to his slyness and mischievous teasing.
- Sakura being sensitive to people touching his hair is another (in spite of the fact that Umemiya patted his head during their first meeting with little resistance), or having PTSD around being touched in certain ways due to his terrible childhood, as the details of which have been kept somewhat vague thus far.
- Some like to think that Hiragi and Sako secretly started hanging out or going on dates after the Shishitoren arc settled. Though things ended amicably with them becoming allies, many just like the idea of them keeping it private to avoid teasing or making a fuss.
- It’s been widely accepted by the fandom that after the Noroshi arc, Sakura makes good on his promise to hang out with Endo and will on occasion go out to meet with him to chat or spar, usually behind his friends’ backs since they (understandably) don’t have a good opinion of him.
- Fanfic Fuel:
- There are a number of fanfics that explore the possibility of Sakura accepting Endo’s offer to go with him, be it willingly or unwillingly. Because of the circumstances that surrounds said offer and Endo’s somewhat twisted personality, these fics tend to veer into Dark Fic territory.
- A lot of writers tend to take liberties with Sakura and Suo’s backstories since so little has been revealed about their past, especially Suo.
- Friendly Fandoms:
- With Tokyo Revengers. Several Tokyo Revengers fans are also readers of WIND BREAKER and are on good terms with WIND BREAKER readers. Not surprising given that both manga are about delinquents. Archetypes in both series are often compared, with Nirei constantly being favorably compared to the TR protagonist Takemichi Hanagaki.
- With Jujutsu Kaisen, partly thanks to a number of overlapping voice actors in the Animated Adaptation. In particular, Umemiya is often fondly compared to Gojo, due to having similar appearances and entertaining, yet charismatic personalities, as well as sharing the same voice actor.
- With Blue Lock, considering WIND BREAKER airs the same time when the movie of Blue Lock comes out and both of them star Yūma Uchida (Sakura/Reo) and Nobunaga Shimazaki (Suo/Nagi), whose characters are mostly grouped together in their respective series. Satoru Nii also drew a pic when Sakura and Suo playing football together with Reo and Nagi, as well as the video game of both series feature collaborations, providing further food for thought for crossovers.
- With The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity, as its author Saka Mikami used to work as Satoru Nii's assistant and both authors still keep in touch, frequently drawing fanart of each others' respective series. Later on, both works are adapted into anime by the same studio with overlapping voice actors, and the male lead Rintaro is also compared to Hiiragi at one point for their similar appearances.
- Launcher of a Thousand Ships:
- Haruka, being The Hero and a massive Tsundere, gets shipped with just about everyone: Suo, Sugishita, Nirei, Umemiya, ... even Togame and Endo.
- Umemiya's Big Brother Instinct and the admiration he receives from both friends and even foes gives shippers plenty of material for various ships.
- LGBT Fanbase: The manga is very well regarded by queer fans, with some characters in particular being very popular among them:
- Tsubakino, while confirmed to identify as male, is popular with trans viewers and fans of trans characters for being so blatantly fem presenting. Right down to crossdressing on a regular basis, preferring the more feminine "-chan" honorific, and referring to himself with the gender neutral "watashi" in the Japanese version. His backstory is reminiscent of many trans peoples' coming out experience and his crush on Umemiya is acknowledged and respected by everyone as well.
- Takiishi, whose profile listed his favourite things as supposed "feminine" traits like long hair, wearing heels, manicure or sets of unisex outfits, and his borderline-The Masochism Tango relationship with Endo. In return, some of Endo's dialogues are rather... suggestive out of context, which some readers interpret him as Ambiguously Bi.
- Memetic Mutation:
- The Ancient Chinese Spirit.Explanation
- Gaso 10.Explanation
- Moe:
- Haruka Sakura may be the biggest example in the series. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone in or out of universe who wouldn't find his blushing expressions cute.
- Nieri's short stature, clumsiness, and scaredy cat tendencies make him very adorable. It's no wonder why the class is so protective of him.
- Most Wonderful Sound: Whenever ''Higher I'll Go''
starts playing in the background, which is a sign that the characters are about to start kicking some ass. - One True Threesome: Sakura, Nirei, and Suo often get shipped with one another and some fan artists choose to portray them in a polycule. It helps that they are seldom seen apart from one another and often have wholesome interactions in canon.
- Signature Scene: Sakura beating up an entire gang by himself in the first episode quickly started making the rounds on YouTube. The scene was marveled for the smooth animation, great choreography, and for establishing Sakura as a capable and compelling protagonist.
- Superlative Dubbing: The English dub has been generally well received. Praise has especially gone towards Austin Tindle for embodying Sakura's fiery but secretly soft persona and Chris Guerrero, who nails the stilted speaking pattern of Togame.
- Trans Audience Interpretation: While Tasuku Tsubakino identifies as male and is a Wholesome Crossdresser in the series, fans view Tsubakino as a trans woman, based on how his backstory is very reminiscent of a trans person's coming out experience. This interpretation is supported by his fem presenting appearance, how he prefers the more feminine "-chan" honorific, and how he refers to himself with the gender neutral "watashi" pronoun in the Japanese version.
- Woolseyism:
- In episode 2, hearing Suo introduce himself as Leonardo DiCaprio as a joke, Sakura buys it, thinking he's a foreigner and fumbly introduce himself in English. The English dub changes for Sakura to use Italian in this scene instead, fitting with said actor's Italian descent in real life.
- Sugishita often demands that people address Umemiya with the "-san" honorific. In episode 5 of the English dub, he tells Arima to call him "Umemiya sir" after he had used his name as a distraction to get a cheap shot in.
