- Award Snub: Reese Witherspoon's performance is wildly acclaimed as her best work, even moreso than the role that won her the Oscar. However, she lost to Julianne Moore for Still Alice, which is seen as a Consolation Award for how many times Moore got snubbed herself.
- She Really Can Act: It was already known that Reese Witherspoon could act; but after winning an Oscar for Walk the Line, she starred in a series of wildly panned films which led to many people questioning whether she was talented to begin with. This film, with the most subtle and most emotional performance of her career, proved she was still a fantastic actress.
- Spiritual Successor: To Into the Wild, another film about someone Desperately Seeking A Purpose In Life going on an extended hiking trip. However, whereas Christopher goes unprepared into the uninhabited Alaskan wilderness and dies alone, Cheryl prepares almost too well and hikes the Pacific Crest Trail, a well-travelled route where she encounters many other hikers.
