- Anvilicious: Naturally, one of the targets of a He-Man Woman Hater Serial Killer would be a woman who knocked on doors for the Hillary Clinton campaign: he even took her Hillary pin as his Creepy Souvenir, and Ballard briefly waxes poetic about the failed attempt to "break the thickest glass ceiling in the country".
- Catharsis Factor:
- The ending of episode eight sees Olivas finally getting arrested for his role in the ring of dirty cops connected to the cartel.
- In the season 1 finale, Ballard using Rawls’s own kettle weight to incapacitate Gary Pearlman, who not only was the show’s overarching Serial Killer but had also fatally shot Rawls.
- Fridge Brilliance: In the early episodes of the series, Ted Rawls seems less interested in solving the case than the others, and his being mentioned to be Councilman Pearlman's friend implies he's only there to monitor the case from the inside for the councilman. In the book, he was the killer. His attitude in these episodes is a Red Herring for people who have read the book to let them think he'll turn out to be the killer before it's revealed that in this adaptation, the killer is someone else.
- Narrowed It Down to the Guy I Recognize: Kevin Dunn is arguably the most recognisable guest star to appear in the first season, so more savvy viewers probably weren't overly surprised when his role turned out to be something more important than the seemingly incidental part of Pearlman's father.
- Nightmare Fuel:
- Driscoll breaking into Ballard’s house and trying to strangle her to death while she’s asleep; Ballard literally wakes up to Driscoll in the act, and in the ensuing fight between them she accidentally crushes his windpipe in self-defense. She calls Aaron and with his help performs an Impromptu Tracheotomy, but Driscoll pulls out the tube and throws it away, as he prefers to die instead of being exposed.
- Gary Pearlman fatally shooting Rawls at the end of episode 9 after learning that Rawls has now learned that Gary is the Serial Killer that the cold case unit has been chasing the whole season.
- Gary coming to kill Ballard in the season 1 finale, firing at her repeatedly after cutting the power.
- Tear Jerker: From episode 10 of season 1, both the reveal that Rawls died on the operating table after getting shot by Gary Pearlman, and his subsequent funeral, including the speech Ballard gives during it and the rest of the team’s reactions to getting the news.
