Bad Day on the Midway

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: In the book, while Ted's reaction to Lottie succumbing to the plague is shown, Dixie's isn't, which is strange since Lottie was supposed to be Dixie's best friend, and Dixie isn't shown to have any reaction to it even after she and the other survivors make it out of the Midway.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Otto has an incredibly shrill voice and he's an all-around unpleasant small-time con man, but his genuine distress over losing Oscar, who he sincerely thinks is his best friend, might make you feel a pang of sympathy for him. He just doesn't realize that Oscar doesn't like him because of his mistreatment by humans.
  • Narm: Most of the time, Ted's Creepy Monotone voice is very effectively unnerving, but it doesn't work so much in Jocko's ending where he flatly tells Jocko that his mother just died and he's very upset in the tone of voice of someone who just spilled their milk, even though Lottie is very important to him. Shortly afterward, Ted is meant to be so frightened by Oscar's sudden appearance that he accidentally stabs himself on Jocko's knife and dies, but he just sounds mildly disgusted at best. The crude animation of the events and the goofy sound effect that plays when Ted stabs himself could suggest that the scene was meant to be Played for Laughs, however.
  • Tear Jerker: Dixie can read the poems left behind by her father, which all convey his depression and self-loathing. Once Dixie gets to his suicide note, she can't bring herself to read any more of the poems for the rest of her route.
