- Angst Aversion: This short has a reputation for being much more mean-spirited than most Tom and Jerry cartoons. Whereas most shorts revolve around Tom trying to eat Jerry, getting comically injured and immediately recovering by the next scene, most of this short's "humor" is derived from Tom being bullied and humiliated. Thus, roughly half the fanbase recommends just skipping it.
- Broken Base: This is one of the most divisive Tom and Jerry cartoons from The '40s. While it has its fans who think it's just as funny as the other cartoons from the era, others think it's needlessly sadistic for a franchise centred around Slapstick.
- Catharsis Factor: For instigating the conflict and leading Tom's "friends" into making fun of him, Jerry accidentally swallowing the castor oil that Nancy fed to Tom and vomiting it is certainly what he deserved.
- Fanon Discontinuity: Some fans like to pretend this short doesn't exist (and that Butch debuted in Springtime for Thomas) because they believe that it's mean-spirited even by Tom and Jerry's standards.
- Funny Moments: The bit with Jerry pretending to take a shower and screaming when Tom spots him doing it is often said to be the funniest bit in the episode even by the short's biggest detractors.
- Memetic Mutation: The above mentioned moment with Jerry screaming when Tom spots him while pretending to take a shower.
